Its Nebraska Week! Your favorite Memories
filed in Rivals on Nov.20, 2007
Rivalries are great things. They make a game at the end of a 5 and 6 season seem important, and can even make it memorable. A big win for Nebraska could even save Callahan’s job (I really doubt it, but it could happen). A big win for the Buffs would really change the whole dynamic of this season. It would be a vindication of sorts, as really, most people did not expect the Buffs to do more than get to a bowl game. This season has seen inconsistency as the Buffs yo-yoed back and forth from disappointing performances to memorable ones and back again. We even saw the honeymoon period end for Hawkins with the 55-10 meltdown in boulder against Mizzou. But enough about the season. The season is gone. They playoff for respect is here.
The collective memory of the respective fanbases defines any particular rivalry. The long memories of Nebraska fans makes some of them deny that such a rivalry even exists… I would humbly disagree, and it is apparent that a new generation of Husker fans does think this game is a rivalry game. My memories of this rivalry are very short compared to those of many other Buffs that frequent this site, but so is my lifespan.
I remember the first CU-NU game I ever saw. It was the day after thanksgiving in the year 2000 (ya, start laughing:). I did not even know I was going to attend CU yet, and barely recognized the team (I grew up in Hawaii and was not in high school yet when CU won the national championship, give a guy a break). All I did know was that the guys in red had just gone down by a point and that they were driving for a game winning field goal. I immediately started rooting for the Buffs to stop them. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so and Eric Crouch led the BugEaters to a game winning fieldgoal.
The next year, now that was a bit different. Both teams were in the top 10, with NU #1. This game was my first time attending the rivalry in person. It was incredible. I had been to every game that year, and no game had come close to matching this one in intensity.
My Favorite Moment:Purify’s 39 yard run to open the scoring. It was a sign of things to come, and the stadium just went nuts. Rushing the field and all the other fun stuff was also a good time, but really, that was like the first bite of a cake. Even if you get to eat the rest of the damn thing, its always the best on the first bite:).
What is your favorite moment in the rivalry?

One things for sure, they do a great job of educating those husker fans. Honestly huskerfanNITESHADOW you could not sound more ignorant than you did in that post. But I would like to thank you for making me more proud than ever to not be a Huskers fan.

I have no favorite moment “in the rivalry” because this ISN’T A RIVALRY! What it is truly is a significant conference game with a vital spot in the schedule. Having said that, there have been plenty of great moments for both sides. CU wins in 1986 and 1989 were both huge and the 1990 CU win in Lincoln was probably their best performance. You can’t overlook several blowouts by the Huskers in the last twenty years and the 2001 blowout by the Buffs isn’t enough to hang your hat on, buffie boys and girls! The 1991 frozen tie was a great game, but my favorite was 1994 when Berringer and the Corn Crew beat Kordell, Rashaan and Company. Happy Thanksgiving to all and GO HUSKERS!

I still think the Buffs win that 1994 game if Kordell doesn’t throw that interception to start the game. It was a killer.

NU wins in 1994, 1995 and 2005 were very special too. One blowout by the Buffs in 01 is not enough to hang your hat on, kids, especially when NU has had SEVERAL blowouts of the Boulder Boys. NU wins going away this Friday as Billy C will pull out all stops in trying to show the world what a great offensive mind he is.

I love when NU fans claim this isn’t a rivalry game – the amount of Husker fans who troll this site denotes that there is a rivalry. How many NU fans follow the Kansas, K-State, and Iowa State fan sites?
Favorite moment has to be the kid crying in the stands after the 2001 blowout; it is a great metaphor for NU fans: spoiled brats who cry when things aren’t going their way!

It is odd that “huskerfan..shadow” is such a loser given the incredible sportsmanship that characterizes the Huskernation. I had the privilege of going to the 1990 game in Lincoln where Eric Bieniemy ripped the Big Red on the way to the national championship. The fans there bought my son and I lunch and congratulated “us” on the game at the end. No foul language. No taunting. If the student body and fans at Folsom were half as good, we could be proud.
Of course the reason is pretty simple: most Nebraska fans grew up there, as I did, and there isn’t much else going on except for great pheasant hunting this time of year. The CU students/fans, in contrast, come from all over the country and don’t take ownership of their team. For several years after that 1990 experience, I used to wade in to the Husker section at Folsom with a couple of Coors beers and give them to some fans to try and make up for the crap that goes on in our student section, but then they banned the beer and it was over.
In any case, the only other memory that comes close is the mid-80′s win when the Buffs literally froze the NU kicker with three timeouts in a row while the ball deflated and turned into a rock on about the 20 resulting in a missed field goal and maybe a tie or win – I can’t remember, but it was worth being there at 20 below or whatever just to watch. Today might be the same! “GO BUFFS!”

My best memory is a whole section of the students getting kicked out in boulder…….their fans throwing batteries and snowballs at players and fans…tires slashed….stay classy Colorado and enjoy getting your asses kicked in Lincoln
