QB Statistics: Food for thought
filed in Uncategorized on Oct.23, 2007
On several different outlets (most notably the colorado daily buffzone), questions have arisen about whether or not CU needs to make a change at QB. I believe the single longest comments section ever at buffzone has arisen from that big Q. I am firmly on the NO side at this point, but I thought it would be interesting to go over the stats and situation a bit. Here is the stats so far this year.
| NAME | CMP | ATT | YDS | CMP% style='mso-spacerun:yes'> | YDS/A | TD | INT | SACKS | RAT |
| Cody Hawkins | 172 | 304 | 1967 | 56.6 | 6.5 | 13 | 14 | 12 | 115.83 |
Ya, he ranks #19 in the nation for total yards. Not bad for a redshirt freshman with receivers who like to drop or tip balls. In terms of efficiency, not so good. In QB Rating, Completion %, and YDS/A, this guy is ranked in the EIGHTY’s nationally. Not good at all. He is also tied for SECOND in the nation for the most INT’s, one behind Adam Weber of 1-7 Minnesota. Incidentally, Adam Weber is the only Freshman with more yards at this point in the season than Cody. To end this part of the analysis on a high note, Cody is tied for 33rd in the nation for TD’s. Oh ya, that is higher then Sam Keller of a certain school where the children of the corn coming to life would be considered a positive.
Cody’s stats project out like this:
| NAME | CMP | ATT | YDS | CMP% style='mso-spacerun:yes'> | YDS/A | TD | INT | SACKS |
| Cody Hawkins | 258 | 456 | 2951 | 56.6 | 6.47 | 20 | 21 | 18 |
The good: Cody is on pace to get the #2 yardage and TD totals at CU of all time. As a freshman. With very questionable receivers, an iffy offensive line, and the #84 ranked rushing offense in the nation (I know the backs have put up some #s against bad teams, but against good teams they have only ONE good performance). Also, Cody has yet to play NU (oh yes, Hawk must be licking his chops for this game!)
The Bad: Cody WILL shatter the all time INT record at CU set in 04 by Joel Klatt of 15.
The best: Hes a freshman…. And his passing stats are getting better as he progresses through the season, with 5 of his last 6 games above 60% completion rate… and he has played Four top 15 teams already this year. Thats some tough stuff!

Playing the quaterback position is all about establishing a rhythm. If they were to pull Cody out now, everything up to this point would be for nothing. I think what everyone needs to keep in mind is that HE IS A FRESHMAN. This kid is 19 years old!! He’s going to make mistakes, and we have to be okay with that for now. All the little things he does wrong (passing mechanics, point of release, etc.) will be corrected in the off-season. Don’t think Hawkins doesn’t see the amount of tipped balls thrown, you just don’t mess with a quarterback’s throwing motion in the middle of the season.
I love the kid. I think he has a good arm and is gaining confidence, and with that comes mistakes. Every quarterback in America is arrogant enough to think they have the arm of Brett Favre and can make the ball fit in that tight spot. Trouble is, there’s only one Brett Favre, but you’ll never hear a QB admit to having a sub-par arm. That’s why QBs play the position–arrogance, attention, adrenaline, you get to touch the ball every play, and when the game is on the line, you want the ball in your hands.
Don’t give up on the kid. Roll with the punches, we’ll all be much better off next year because of it. Can you imagine these kids in this offense 3 years from now? WOW. Barnett’s “Return to Dominance” motto won’t even begin to explain CU Football in the years to come.
Been bleeding Black and Gold for over 20 years!!!
GO BUFFS!!!

Sometimes a change at the qb position could provide the team a spark. Perhaps if we had a real athletic threat at qb, if BJax were around, we could use that player for such a spark. Hawkins has been plagued by inconsistent pass catchers and poor decision making, the former may contribute to the latter.

I don’t think I was clear on this…
CODY IS GOING TO NEARLY BREAK THE ALL TIME TD AND YARDS RECORDS AT CU!!! AS A FRESHMAN!!!! ITS FRICKEN HISTORIC! And its not like he did it against patsies either….
Defenses he has played are ranked thusly in Defensive Pass Efficiency:
KU= #4 (over 60% completion)
KSU= #25 (only game under 50% completion
BU = #66
OU = #54 (wow thought that would be higher)
UM(oh = #86
FSU = #32 (first career 300 yard game)
ASU = #7
CSU = #74
Average = 43.5… With 3 top 25 teams played. With these receivers… Also, he has played against 3 of the top 16 teams (2 in the top 10) in terms of interceptions.
Compare these defensive stats to what Colt Brennan or most other QB’s have faced….
The only other player not named Koy Detmer who even came close to these kind of numbers was Joel Klatt in 03 when he had TWO SENIOR RECEIVERS, BOTH OF WHICH WENT TO THE NFL, ONE OF WHICH IS STILL A STARTER!!! (Everybody bow down to D.J. Hackett)

PAPA what are you smoking?!?!?!?! Do you remember the record last year with BJax…Keep him away from the center. I do like watching the game pass the 1st quarter. Keep Baby Hawk in!!!! He is just getting his wings a flapping and soon he will be flying high baby…remember this isn’t intramural brother and BJax is intramural.
