Mistakes and Missed Opportunities
filed in Post-game on Sep.17, 2007
After the CSU game I posted enthusiasm for the coaching, especially on offense. I also mentioned a new era for our offense with both competent personnel and coaching and even my concerns on how well our defense would perform. Well…a lot has happened since that game and sadly our team is evolving into a shadow of last year: a struggling offense and a pretty good defense.
Many have said it, and I will as well, there were too many missed opportunities and mistakes. From missed field goals, to missed snaps, to missed blocks, to miscommunication, our offense needs to eliminate the mistakes if it hopes to contend and succeed. It seemed like each time the offense had some success it would end with squandered opportunity. One step forward, two steps back was the theme of the offense. Coaching needs to figure out what can be done to stop our offense from being one-dimensional. Also, each individual needs to step up as well. Could Hawk have thrown some better balls? (How about done the middle of the field, too.) Sure, but his wide receivers and tight ends had plenty of opportunities when the ball was right on their numbers. All in all we need to all step-up, including coaching. Some of the plays called were both disturbing and confusing and reminded me of the side-line hysteria during the Barnett days.
Defensively CU has done its job. What concerns I posted a couple of weeks ago have all but evaporated. I still believe we had a turnover early in the third when Brad Jones grabbed the ball. (Big 12 officiating continues to stink to high heaven.) Even when the Noles lined up on our 15 yard line with 4 downs to go, they still settled for a field goal. I commend the CU defense for embarrassing the Noles offense. Coach Bowden is on the decline and where he stops nobody knows……
Ultimately, even in these weak years for FSU their personnel are talented, and CU is a program still in transition. The Buffs are better than last year, heck they are better than last week, but still need to improve and eliminate mistakes. My hope is that this next game will help the offense to establish a rhythm and tempo and allow the defense to continue to shine. Just as long as the Buffs take their opponent seriously, the minute we believe this is an easy win against a push over school we will be digging our grave. Coach Hawk and Helfrich need to figure out how to take our offense from almost successful to success, and D keep the fight up!
The night game was great; hopefully we can have more in the future. The “Blackout” was also a great success; a shout out to the students for supporting the team. I can’t remember seeing that many people at Folsom. It was both crazy and a ton of fun. At least I got in unlike some others……..

Helfrich needs to stop reading Shawn Watsons biography. Its seems to me that the brains behind the Boise Offense is Chris Petersen, the one that stayed behind. How about recruiting some players that are elgible? How bad is Hugh Charles? and Patrick Williams, Robinson and Sprague? Makes you yearn for Neuheisel. At least his teams had a little punch. I feel bad for the current students, living off lucky Barnett and Coach Mac’s legacy. Mike Bohn, if the water ain’t hot, the logs are forming around the kettle.
And Hawkins? Did you see how bad he looked at halftime? Did he have a hangover from Friday night’s frat party? Expect more crap because like Barnett, he cannot recruit.
HAWKENS IS A JOKE AND AN EMABARESSMENT TO MY (YOUR) ALMA MATER.

Talk about 1 dimensional on offense. We were worse than that. When you can’t run the ball and you don’t throw the ball over the middle, the only thing left to cover is the flats.
Point of note, the only touchdown came over the middle. we should remember that for later

Note to comment #1… The one good year Barnett had, he pulled in a #7 in the nation recruiting class. To bad he couldn’t coach it that well. As far as Hawkins not being able to recruit, I would say a top 40 recuriting class with a 2 and 10 record is pretty good. Lets see how he does this year with a mediocre record before judging anything. His players DID beat Oklahoma last year.

“His players”…what? Seems that “his” players on the CU squad should start playing Big 12 football. Boozy State is known for getting the most out of their kids, regardless of talent, not like the CU patsys that make boosters think twice.
Bowden said “Spock” screwed up last year by giving these Doogie Howser ball players a disservice by not weening them off Barnetts system and gradually introducing “Spocks”. Hindsight is 20/20, foresight says “Your Fired Spock!”
