Game 3 – Florida State
filed in Pre-game on Sep.13, 2007 by Gampp
Bobby Bowden and Florida State come calling on Saturday night in the home opener for the Buffs. Coming off of a tough loss to Arizona State, Colorado will need to put the past behind them if they hope to have any chance against the Seminoles. While Florida State seems to be having another “down” year, they are still loaded with speed and talent on both sides of the ball and will hold the decided advantage when it comes to experience. Many will write off the Buffs after the dismal loss to Arizona State, but this team has shown that it’s resilient and I expect them to come out with their heads up and ready to play.
When Colorado has the ball: After looking impressive against Colorado State, the Buff offense was plain awful against the Sun Devils last week. The running game was non-existent as Sumler was stuffed early and often. Coach Hawkins pointed out that Sumler seemed to get discouraged and started giving up, as is typical of a young player. Let’s hope that Demetrius uses last week as a learning experience and puts it behind him. It may not matter, however, as the Buffs expect to have Hugh Charles back this week and hopefully they’ll be able to take advantage of his speed on the outside. It also looks like some of the highly touted freshman offensive lineman, including Ryan Miller, may make their debuts on Saturday night to help in keeping the guys up front fresh. The passing game was almost as bad as the running game against the Devils and the Buffs will have to work hard to get out of that funk. Cody made a number of good long throws, but his short passes lack some zip. The current set of receivers, excluding the surprising Scotty McKnight, can’t seem to catch worth a crap. I look for the return of Josh Smith to help open up the deep passing game. What I’ve yet to understand is why we’re not using the tight ends more. The Buffs have one of the deepest stables of TEs in the county, yet they only have 6 catches between them through the first two games. Expect to see that change against the Seminoles.
When Florida State has the ball: The Buff defense looked tough to start the game against Arizona State, but the combination of the heat, the lack of depth, and the ineffectiveness of the offense caused them to wear down and start giving up plays. The lack of depth is going to be an issue all year and the effectiveness of the defense may continue to hinge on how well the offense performs. Florida State has not looked impressive on offense in their first two games, but the Buffs D-Line will have to get pressure on Weatherford in order to prevent him from picking the secondary apart. Look for Wheatly, Dizon, and Walters to continue to have big games, but this defense really needs one of the big boys (Boye-Doe?) to make an impact if they have any hope of stopping the FSU offense.
Special Teams: The Buffs are hoping to have continued success in both the kickoff and punt returns as I believe that winning the field position battle will be key if the Buffs have any chance up getting the upset. That also means that Matt DiLallo will need to continue to punt well (and hopefully not throw any more passes). If the game comes down to field goals, Florida State looks to have the edge as Cismesia is perfect on the season while Eberhart still looks a little tentative to me.
Overall: On paper, this looks like a solid win for the Seminoles as they obviously have more experienced talent on the field. However, if the young Buffs can limit their mistakes and keep it close going into the fourth quarter, anything can happen. I already picked the upset in the weekly picks, so I’ll do it again. Colorado 30 Florida State 27
* One note for fans going to the game: The students are trying to organize a “Blackout” for the game where all fans wear black. I don’t think it will succeed since the papers aren’t publicizing it, but we can all do our part.

Take a lesson, Buffs. Here is the reality for EVERY team when they come to Lincoln (even the Buffs though they don’t deserve it…) Something that has literally never been displayed in Boulder or by the CU football program. A little thing called “sportsmanship”. This is why the country hates your pathetic team and why CU will never be in the same league as Nebraska…

Oh BSMC, my old friend…you always have been the perfect representative of your team’s sportsmanship.

Does sportsmanship including going to other peoples websites and talking trash? I will enjoy watching USC’s beatdown of nebraska this weekend.

Now, now Ryno old friend, I never said that I personally was the epitome of good sportmanship… Too many times and way too many years of being harassed, threatened, abused, and vandalized at the hands of your team’s fan base. I freely admit that as a result, I am jaded, that’s why I’m here on your site. But to deny the stark contrast in culture between Memorial Stadium and Folsom Field is an ignorant man’s errand…

And Skye, “me thinky” you have absolutely no credibility, and even less knowledge regarding any serious discussion inolving this sport. Truly.

BSMC, this isn’t about “credibility”. It is rather about the fun of talking with fellow fans. The only real credibility is not to be found on the internet, but instead on the field. You are so sad it hurts. Do you cry when NU loses? Do you have any “credibility”? Have you ever played, coached, or even been on a college field? Me thinky not.
Please, for all of us, stop using your mothers computer to insult people. Use it, instead, to find porn, as obviously you have very little use for your libido otherwise. Your father smells of elderberries, and your mother was a hamster.

Son, last time I was in the Memorial Stadium, a crazy blue hair tried to fight me. She babbled something about Warren Buffet and integrity, and then took a swing at me with her official HuskersTM brand umbrella. Lots of pent-up anger in that place, I tell you…
Perhaps this is a bad example. It only takes one, right? She was, after all, wearing an “I bleed husker red” t shirt. No shit, grandma? You too?
Watch out, Billy C, the natives are restles. I hear Michigan needs a coach.

The sooner you guys learn to ignore BSMC and the others, the sooner they will go away. Keep the conversation about the Buffaloes, stay away from the ridiculous insults and flame wars. You’ll never shut them up, no matter how good your insults are or how relevant your statistics are. I really used to enjoy this website…..

FSU dominates the hapless Buffs…
Hawkins, with his Opie Taylor looks and Ghandi spouting “Hawkisms” is an embarrassment..
Guys, I really feel for you when this guy continues to talk like he’s some kind of Big Time genius of a coach…
3-14 is good enough for you guys I reckon..

Dear Dr. Dolittle.
As if Callahan went to Harvard. I saw that WF game. And talk about lucky? and I don’t mean Marlon. Sure a Win is a Win. But your false belief is gonna disturb your pathetic world. NU stinks, maybe not as bad the Buffs. What will you say when CU beats FSU, and NU gets blasted by USC?
The only thing a true sportsfan could say “2 and 1 is 2 and 1″ Our 2 and 1 would be just as good as yours. Just wait til we get you off those farm subsidies.

Callahan is 1-0 against Hawkins. But that really doesn’t say much, Most Coaches are 1-0 against Hawkins, aren’t they?? FSU is simply a higher class team than CU. Better coaches, better players, better facilities and better fans. If a snowball has a chance in hell then I guess CU has a chance. My advice is get very drunk and talk about how the academics are better at CU, football is not going to be nice…

I dunno. I would say the fact that hawkins basically got half his career losses last year means that quite a few coaches are much worse then one and 0 against him. I see the buffs playing it close till the end. If our D can stay fresh enough so that the coaches don’t go into that soft zone coverage like they did after the first quarter of the ASU game, we could really just harry the hell out of weatherford. When our D was blitzing, Rudy (he did eventually beat the hell out of us) Carpenter was really making bad decisions and getting wrecked. Once that ended, so did our D’s chance as our coverage isn’t good enough against top flight WR’s….
We need our D in this one to give our O a chance to wear down the FSU defense in the altitude. The spread (+4) from vegas definitely means that other people think it will be a close one. Let’s hope the ball bounces our way (I am thinking of that almost pick on Cody at the end of the game against CSU on the goalline…)

Yea what happened with the blitz in the second half? I noticed that too at the game. We were in his face most of the first half, then Zippo. The coaching staff are THE WORST HALFTIME ADJUSTERS IN THE COLLEGE GAME. Not once have they come out and played better. At least Coach Mac could figure out a new direction at half. Cannot imagine what snoozer speech they gave at ASU…”After our asskicking we are going to Baskin Robbins for banana splits!”

I think our depth is telling. Our guys are tired each and evrey time cause the young guys aren’t ready yet and the old guys have to play to much. Lets hope that gets better as the season goes on or our teams will really suffer in the second half of the season and the second half of games. Hints that Ryan Miller and other young Olinemen are ready marks a good sign.
On the defensive side of the ball, no word other then Sipili coming back. Lets hope they grow up quick!
