The biggest problem with having an annual non-conference game against an in-state opponent is the fact that the games are always so close. While great for television ratings, it provides heartburn inducing suspense that should be reserved for more important conference games later in the season. Luckily for the Buffs, they found a way to narrowly escape with a win (31-28 OT).
Both teams looked extremely rusty on defense with the game opening up with a flurry of touchdowns. The Buffs were completely ineffective stopping the Rams on 3rd down during the first half. Colorado State took an 11 point lead late in the game and the Buffs responded with a touchdown, 2 point conversion, and a last second field goal by Kevin Eberhart to send the game into overtime.
Game ball should go to game savior Terrence Wheatley as he came up with a clutch interception in overtime which pretty much sealed up the win. He was the lone shining spot in the Buff’s lackluster secondary. He also had 2 great kickoff returns including one for about 80 yards.
The offense did a decent job overall considering they had a brand new freshman quarterback Cody Hawkins, and Hugh Charles went out of the game on the opening drive with a hamstring injury. Demetrius Sumler was the replacement RB and his participation came mostly by some unusual direct snaps.
Next week: @ Arizona State.
Go Buffs!
