Buffs.tv Big XII Editor Pick ‘Em — Week 1
filed in Pick'Em on Aug.30, 2007 by Gampp
We’re starting a new weekly editors pick ‘em pool for all of the Big XII action each week. First a little business regarding the pool: All games are picked against the spread taken earlier in the week and noted in the table. A pick for an underdog is strictly to cover the point spread unless you see a pick also tagged with “(win)” which indicates the underdog outright winning the game. If an underdog covers, but fails to win the game, a “win” pick will get credit for being correct for the week and the season, but will be counted as a loss in the “Underdog Win Projections” category.
Week 1 is always a challenge as every team looks good in the weight room and in practice. Also, many teams are playing schools that no one knows anything about. This week, there are only two unanimous picks; Colorado over CSU by more than 2.5 points and Iowa State over Kent State by more than 3.5 points. The Buffs pick is obvious, we’re all homers and are hoping for a good start to the season. Iowa State doesn’t look to be any good this year, but Kent State should be even worse, so the Cyclones get the pick to win one for the new coach. The rest of the picks are a mixed bag, but there is obviously some hesitation to laying a bunch of points (Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M) in the first game of the season. Teams tend to make mistakes in the first game and it’s harder to blow a team out while you’re getting your legs under you. The only real surprise I see is two underdog “win” predictions for Oklahoma State at Georgia. I hope that they’re right as I like to see the Big XII do well against the other major conferences, but I’m not as confident as Nick and Skye. Anyway, feel free to comment on the picks or to post your own in the comments section.

I love it Gampp and Marc when you continue to prove my point that you are truly the dumbest of the dumbest representatives of the Buffs Nation (a bold statement by any account). Here’s to a great season of watching you eat your words before Nebraska eats your lunch after Thanksgiving!…

BSMC, is that you!?? Get back to bed! We’ve got crops to pick tomorrow! And pick up your overalls – I’m tired of cleaning up after your lazy ass!

How did we prove your point again? By picking Nevada to cover? If I had a true bias against Nebraska, I’d pick them to lose, but I didn’t. Let me explain how point spreads work. The line is set so that casinos and bookies get roughly the same amount of money bet on both sides. They then minimize their risk and make their money on the commissions. They set the line at 21 because that’s the point where they can achieve this balance. I think the Huskers will win by less than 21, you think they’ll win by 150. Nebraska has a new QB, a RB that featured for the first time, a completely new D-Line, and Bill Callahan. Don’t you think it’s possible that they’ll struggle a little in the first game trying to get all of the kinks worked out? Never mind, it’s like trying to reason with a 2 year old.

So after one game we are all even. At least we’ve got that going for us.

Wow, so now we know that Iowa State is really terrible. Kent State? At home? Ouch.

well… damn… 2 and 10 can happen with a new coach unfortunately. Though Iowa State might get LUCKY to get that much if they are that bad.
