First day of Practice
filed in Depth Chart on Aug.06, 2007 by Marc
Finally, after what seems like an eternity of waiting fall practice is here. It couldn’t come any sooner as this summer has dragged on and on and on.
The 7 on 7 drills have been well attended all summer and the team has been bulking up. I’m sure later this week we will here how this is the strongest Buffs team in years. But will that strength translate into success?
Yes, a new QB will be a huge piece of that success, but I would suggest everyone look closely at the lines. I think they may hold the real key to Buffs success. With only a few linemen in Spring Drills the Buffs look to 11 newcomers to fill the holes. On offense both the running game and the passing game will live or die with these guys. On defense the loss of Abraham Wright and Walter Boye Doe provide immediate needs for pressure.
GO Buffs!

I agree that the lines are going to be the key to our success. In addition, we are going to need to get some better play out of our WRs if we have any hope of moving the ball. The athletic office had a good article today with some comments from Ryan Miller. It’s good to see that this kid is humble and ready to work to earn his spot:
“Freshman offensive lineman Ryan Miller was one of several newcomers who was mixed in with the veterans because of class conflicts with the earlier morning session. The 6’8, 320-pound lineman was confident in his approach to fall camp, yet honest about what he has in front of him.
“I have God-given size, but there is no way I’m ready to start right now,” Miller said. “It felt good. Obviously things are going 90 miles an hour; in high school you dominate but in college you’re back on that first level. I’m on that first level right now bringing up pads and I just have to work my way back up.”
Miller admits the mental approach to football is just as important to his success as his physical stature.
“It’s more of a school aspect,” Miller said. “I have to study the plays more. Football in college is a class and a business, and it’s the greatest thing so far in my life.”
He also had good things to say about his position coach Jeff Grimes.
“He’s more of a teacher than a coach right now and that’s a great thing,” Miler said. “I’ll take all the help I can get from these guys so I can start this freshman year.”
Miller, who stood at 6’4, 250 pounds as a high school sophomore and at 6’6, 260 pounds as a junior, would like to get down to a playing weight of around 310 pounds. When asked the last time he remembered not being the biggest player on his football team, he quipped, “I couldn’t tell you.””

First day of practice and the bad news continues. Lets see, where do we start. How the bout the easy stuff, like Patrick Gates (& Perez) being inelgible. Then there’s Super DE Hudgins who is out for the season with a bad achilles. Then of course the UFC tag team of Sipili, Taynor and Perri. Suspended through the first couple of games. Faatagi and Barnett are close to being ineligible, if you read between the lines. Then Cameron Ham breaking his leg. And this is only the first day. Don’t hold your breath, more problems to come…Who’s next to get hit with injury/inelgible bug? If its Hawkins or Charles, we are like a nut…gonna get screwed.

I’m excited that our strength and conditioning program looks to be taking off. Last year, Jeff Pittman, the strength and conditioning coach, said that only 11 Buffs could power-clean more than 300 pounds at the start of fall camp. This year 63 Buffs were able to accomplish that!
