Spring Practice is here
filed in Depth Chart on Mar.13, 2007 by Marc
It’s time for Hawkins second edition of spring football. More than just getting to know his team, this year he should be able to focus on installing his brand of football. Although with only six healthy offensive lineman, I’m sure this isn’t the perfect spring scenario for the Buffs and new offensive line coach Jeff Grimes.
What to watch? Well the most important aspect of this spring will be the competition at QB. JC transfer Nick Nelson, senior Bernard Jackson and redshirt freshman Cody Hawkins. Take you pick. One of these guys needs to take the 2007 Buffaloes on his back and lead them to victory. Word is Nelson showed up out of shape; that bodes well for his chances. Jackson still has a questionable throwing arm. And Hawkins is well he’s still the coaches son, no matter how you slice it. Who do you think is going to shine? If none of these guys step up Matt Ballenger will be added to the mix in the fall.
Go Buffs!

You have to believe that either Nelson or Hawkins will end up with the job. Jackson proved last year he wasn’t up to snuff at the QB position. You have to give him credit for stepping into a tough situation, but we need a QB who can throw the ball effectively. Early indications have Nelson in the top spot, and that would be the safe choice. I would like to see what Hawkins can do, but I would hate to see him thrown under the bus if he struggles as a freshmen.
The OL situation is very concerning – how did we allow ourselves to get so depleted? It could be another rough year unless all five starters are able to stay healthy. Ryan Miller will probably end up starting, and that’s a tall order for a true freshmen.

All those QB’s probley suck anyways. Its the line that needs to make some plays. Oh, and how about the OC? Did he read Shawn Watsons playbook last year? How about all those wonderful halftime adjustments he made to get us back in the game? Am I wrong, or did I see the same game plan vs. Montana St. as vs.Nebraska? Teams are supposed to get better throughout the year. And one last thing “you know”. Has anyone ever heard “Hawk” talk? He is the “You know” King. First thing you learn in speech class is to get rid of the “you knows”. However, I “know” this, HE BETTER WIN NEXT YEAR

Kid Buffaloe – it’s “PROBABLY” a good thing you aren’t the offensive coordinator. Give Hawk some time to build a program – we won’t be great this year, but we will be better than last year.
I also look for Hugh Charles to have a breakout year this year.

From what I’ve been reading and seeing, spring practice is 100% better than what it was last year. From what I can grasp from the practice videos on CUBUFFS.com, Cody looks to be really good. What I’ve noticed he has that Peyton Manning look while he’s in the pocket. He scan’s his reads and if you look at his feet, they’re always turning and bouncing around. Nick Nelson looks to be ok, B Jack is way off target when he throws, and Cody looks like he was hyped out to be last year. Give these men some time and to prepare. We are going to take it to CSU this year and that will start off the season on a great note and turn this season into a great one. The only thing I’m really curious about is P.T. Gates. Where is he? Has he not transferred yet or is he just not coming until the fall? I’m excited to see Charles and Gates run a one two punch into the opponents.

I hope someone is repairing the band-wagon because I have a feeling there will be a horde of “fans” who will want to jump back on after the Buffs start winning.

To a few of the Buffs fans that want Hawks head on a platter, take it easy give him some time. His staff done a great job recruiting (only first year in the box picking there own players) and the spring is off to a good start, so let the season speak for itself. Some of you are sounding like Husker fans when they went thru change.

It’s fantastic to hear B-Jax is doing so well and that they are finding a productive place for him in the offense. Maybe he isn’t the perfect fit at quarterback, but you have to admire the way he handled himself last season and his attitude this spring. He is perhaps the best player on the team with the ball in his hands, especially in the open field. Plus, the players seem to respect the guy and he works hard. Looking forward to the spring game! Go Buffs!!

First off, Cody was on the sidelines last year and knows the offense. That is a VERY BIG part of the game, “PERIOD”! He was an “invite,” to the “ELITE 11″ camp, and when all was said and done, he was the 3rd best QB! On the other side, I am a fan of Bernard, but there is no shot of him throwing the ball as a QB this season, unless its a gaguet/trick play! Bernard “WILL”, play as a “WR”! For your comment about Ballenger,…… NO Shot! He does not know the offense! Hawk will not take a chance with someone that can’t lead the team. Lets stop gunning on the buffs, they “Will play for a national championship in 3 years. Remember 1 little thing, it was hawks guys that beat the sooners!!!!! GIVE HIM TIME!!!!! 1 more thing, 4th best line and 30th overall for the new guys comming in! CU PRIDE NATIONWIDE!! JERSEY!!!!!

First off, cody will start at qb this season! He knows the offense, PERIOD! He was the third best qb at the elite 11 camp, which is an INVITE ONLY, camp! Second, bernard will not throw the ball as a qb unless its a trick play! He will be a wr!Stop bashing the coaching and players! Enough already! Remember, it was hawks guys that beat OU! National champs in 3 years! Jersey!

Has anyone been following recruiting for next year? The Buffs have had two big time receivers commit already. One is a 5-star (top JC prospect), and the other is a 4-star out of Texas. It’s nice to see a) the Buffs signing big time receivers for a change, and b) signing someone out of Texas. Nice work, Hawk!
Nebraska fans: I’m sure you think you’re recruiting class is 1,000 times better, you are #1, CU sucks, yada, yada, yada… so please save your breath.

I didn’t know Rams fans were smart enough to know how to use the internet. Give me a break. We decided to start Bernard on game day with no preparation and still almost won with the terrible team we had last year. Enjoy this year of gloating because you’re going to get destroyed come September. Please write back and post some crap so we can save it and send it back your way on game day.

Nasty Husker Comments. Gosh, And to think you were an Alter Boy. Oh boy, Ram Fans. How many times has CSU shot their load at the Buffs, sometimes winning BUT always getting creamed by some team the next week. Every year, like clockwork, the Rams give it their all, only to lay down like sissys and take in the rear.
Sonny Lubick should pack it up. He needs to focus on beating someone else, the state of Colorado can only handle one good Football team. Plus Ram fans are ugly. Fat and Ugly. Bad DNA. No Teeth. and live in a trailer home near the dump.
