The Buffs return to Folsom to take on Kansas State at 1:40 on Saturday. You can find the game on Fox Sports.
It is hard to believe but the Buffs statistically could win the Big 12 North. This very fact is pretty upsetting for both the Buffs and Big 12 North Football. My guess is that the thought of going to Kansas City in December is the farthest thing from the minds of the players and coaches. Hawk has had some “intense” meetings recently and put the squad through some intense training. Let’s hope it is enough.
Kansas State has a lot riding on this game. A win would give them their first bowl berth since 2003, in combination with a 31-10 win over Iowa State and you can bet they are coming to play.
Defense: This has been the bright spot for the Buffs. Boye-Doe and Wright have formed a potent pass rush. I believe they can shake up K-State’s quarterback Josh Freeman. However, this also means containing James Johnson, who has had back-to-back 100-yard weeks. Currently the defense is shaping up to be our strongest since 1998. If our corners play as well as they did against Tech, than we will be able to contain K-State.
Offense: Well it is never a great sign when a redshirt tight end becomes the backup quarterback, but there you have it Patrick Devenny is our go to should B-Jax go down. Cox is out for the rest of the season with a broken thumb. While our defense is great, K-State’s in nothing to overlook. The Wildcats have held three opponents to 10 points or less and are yielding 18.9 points per game. Also they rank in the top 10 nationally in both tackles for loss and sacks. Defensive end Ian Campbell is rated sixth nationally in sacks. All of this said means our front line needs to play well. Protect Jackson and create opportunity for Hugh and Holiday. If the front line plays well, then the rest of the offense will as well. Of course, it is great to see Gier become a great tight end, and he should be utilized, but I would like to see more from our wide outs; Williams, Sprague, Barnett, Yates, let’s go!
Finally, I hope to see the entire team, especially the offense and coaching, play with some abandonment. We saw this against Georgia and Tech and saw that it was successful. The minute we begin to play safe we lose confidence and momentum. I say play with some reckless abandonment and I believe we will find success. GO BUFFS!
