Buffs Look For #2 Against Sooners
filed in Pre-game on Oct.18, 2006
The Colorado Buffaloes, fresh off their first victory of the season, travel to Norman, OK to face the Sooners. Two weeks ago this game looked like it might just be another in a long line of defeats for the Buffs. But last Saturday two things happened to change all of that. Dan Hawkins finally got his first victory as head coach for the Buffs. All the hard work and perseverance finally paid off for the players and coaches. Everything seemed to click, no penalties, drives resulted in scores, defensive players made sure tackles, and they forced turnovers. Oh and the other important thing that happened last Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners lost Heisman Trophy candidate Adrian Peterson. While this is a great bit of news for the Buffs, and despite the fact that Oklahoma has no other back with over 100 yards rushing, Peterson had over 900, it is important to focus on the players the Sooners do have.
Throughout the season the strength for the Buffs has been the defense. Colorado is only giving up 77 ypg on the ground. In the air the Buffs defenders have given up lots of yards, but did a great job last week limiting the high powered Texas Tech passing game and holding them to one touchdown. Without Peterson in the lineup the burden to move the ball falls more onto the shoulders of quarterback Paul Thompson. Thompson was a wide receiver up until spring ball, but when Rhett Bomar was forced to leave the team due to a scandal Thompson was moved to quarterback, where he was originally recruited. Thompson has played well so far this season moving the Sooners offense efficiently. For the Buffs the key is to pressure Thompson and hopefully force some early turnovers. It is important that the Buffalo defenders do not overlook the Sooner running game. Every year some relatively unknown college player comes off the bench and becomes a star. So, just because the other Sooner running backs have not played much they could still produce a big day if the Buffs aren’t prepared. Overall I like the Buffs chances to hold the Sooners’ offense in check and give the team a good chance to win.
Under Bob Stoops the Sooners have been know to play an aggressive style of defense built upon the shoulders of athletic well disciplined players. Linebackers Rufus Alexander and Zach Latimer are seniors and will be looking to shut down Bernard Jackson and the Buffs running game. Hugh Charles and Mell Holliday have been very productive recently as the Buffs have cranked up the running game. Riar Geer has emerged as the go to guy for Jackson in the passing game. It is important for Jackson to find Geer for some easy completions early on to build confidence. Another must for Colorado is to continue to finish drives. If the Buffs get to the red zone, 3 points is not going to be good enough to beat a ranked team. Receivers must catch passes, Jackson must keep his cool, running backs must run hard, and most importantly turnovers must be avoided. These things happened last week and the Buffs won, if they happen again the Buffs will again emerge with a victory.
Prediction – Buffs keep improving – CU 20 OU 17

20-17? Keep dreaming. This isn’t Tech, you know, with a lousy defense, subpar hot and cold passing game and zero running game Tech. cu simply doesn’t have the offensive firepower to win this game. The puff defense will do it’s part, but it won’t be enough to win. OU by 17.

Oklahoma even without Peterson is much more of a force than the hapless Buffs. OU 45, CU 10.
Nice how you guys at Buffs.tv have systematically blocked almost every IP address that has posted something negative about the Buffs. So much for free speech at CU…

I gave you props for the win over Tech…but whoa fellas…let’s not get crazy. Tech is not exactly a good team. You will be on the road and the Sooners will be looking to prove that they are not a one man team. Close game…but still OU 21 CU 13

That’s just it – the Sooners ARE a one man team. And the man has a broken collar bone. This one will be close. A CU win is certainly not out of the question.

Why are people surprised when a Buffs fan site predicts the Buffs will win?

While Peterson was the workhorse he wasn’t the whole team. There are several playmakers on the Oklahoma offense including Malcolm Kelly, Joe Jon Finley and Paul Thompson (who was moved to qb in August not the spring).
Anyway I think the Buffs are going to see more of a shotgun spread attack that will give Thompson a little more time to throw. Not good news for a team that ranks 11 out of 12 in pass defense.

BSMC – Are you kidding me bro? Take a look around man, we’re still taking our lumps like men. People only get banned when they get off subject with their comments. We’re here to discuss the football, good and bad, not just hammer away with trash talk for no reason. Hey, you guys have Sierra Nevada Pale Ale out there? I’m gettin’ thirsty!
CCMachine – dig your site, I think we’re still working to put some answers together for you. I agree one man doesn’t make the team and people will step up (I think that’s what Hawk meant when he said all that stuff about scholarships being out there etc) but Peterson was scoring 34% of your points…that’s a big loss and a big hole to fill in a week don’t you think? And we’re not even talking about all the momentum and field position. He accounted for 45% of the offense. Granted that’s because he could and no one else had to so people will step up…but how many people have to play A games to fill those shoes? Could be a good game.
And finally, Papa – I hear ya’ barkin’ guard dog. I mean seriously, if “Buff fans” want to talk about how bad we are this year they should head to a different site. No one here is claiming we’re going all the way this year or even the next few but we’re just trying to keep our chins up. It could be a while before Hawk gets his own recruits playing his system, if we hang our heads that whole time we’re going to lose faith. It’s a tough stretch but people have to keep the faith.

You know Ryno, I’m starting to like you more and more every season! Of course we have SN Pale Ales in Nebraska. It happens to be one of my very favorite brews. Although I’m also very fond of some of that Boulder Beer Co. stuff you guys have up there. Here’s a thought… rather than bankrupt you on Nov. 24 we could amend our bet to a 12 pack of Pale Ale versus a 12 of Hazed and Infused (also one of my top 3). Just thought I’d give you a graceful way out. But the original bet would be fine too, either way you’ll be buying me beers when the Huskers dismember your virtually winless Buffs!

Alright, lets stir the pot – who are we predicting to win? Will the buffs be the donor or the recipient of this weekend’s whippin’?

Ok, how is this “off subject” or profane?!? This post is EXACTLY the subject that the Buff fans on this site brought up to begin with. Exactly.
