CU Falls Short Against Mizzou
filed in Post-game on Oct.02, 2006
The Buffs fell to the Missouri Tigers 13 – 28 on Saturday in what started out as a pretty decent battle. Mizzou’s offense came out in high gear and took the Buff’s defense to task with two flawless and unstoppable drives on their first two possessions. The Buffs managed to make a few adjustments on D and slow Chase Daniel and Tony Temple down but a Mizzou touchdown in the waning minutes of the 2nd quarter put CU down 6 – 21 at half.
On the first possession of the second half the Buffs took the ball straight down the field for 6 points in just 2 plays: a 63 yard Jackson to Dusty Sprague bomb and a 1 yard dive by Jackson for the score. That was when the CU faithful started to think the Buffs had finally found their stride on offense. Watching the passing game come to life after 4 games of ugly was exciting. The good news is the passing game did continue to develop the bad news is the Buffs failed to make anything happen despite having a working, albeit clunky, passing game as well as a fired up Hugh Charles running game. The Buffs failed to convert all but one 3rd down in the second half and failed on both 4th down attempts. The defense tried to step it up but the Mizzou offense was on fire and despite a couple of turnovers the Tigers managed to sneak another 7 on the board at the end of the 3rd quarter which sealed the game.
Once again the Buffs continue to improve offensively. Hugh Charles fell just shy of another 100 yard game with 87 net yards. Bernard Jackson actually topped Charles with 93 net rushing yards on 15 carries. Most importantly Jackson started to show that he is indeed a double threat at QB. While his passing numbers aren’t impressive by most standards going only 13 for 27 for 190 yards I think it’s fair to say it was his best game of the season and a vast improvement over the previous 4 outings. After the game Coach Hawk commented on just how important an improved passing game is, “guys are starting to feel we can throw the football, we can make some plays. It’s just a case of keeping it coming.”
What Coach didn’t mention was 3rd down conversions. Passing is fun. A running game is great. But we’re going to have to get a little better at both if we plan on continuing to only convert 25% of our 3rd downs. I can appreciate the “Go For It!!” attitude Hawkins displayed when he chose to go for it on what felt like every 4th down we faced (0 for 5 according to official stats). However, truth be told I’d much rather just convert a few 3rd downs and, more importantly, convert a few drives into 6 points.
Looking forward I think Hawk hit it on the head when he said, “at some point, you’ve got to play to win and not play to lose.” It’s hard to imagine we need to be even hungrier but CU crossed the 50 yard line 8 times in this game and only scored 13 points. The Buffs took the ball away from the opposition 2 times and only managed 13 points. Maybe it’s too many personnel changes preventing a rhythm. Maybe it’s poor play calling. It could be penalties (6 for 56 yards). All of those things contribute to our inability to finish but the biggest problem is execution. The offense is clicking a little more each game but they still have a fair bit more “clicking” to do. Luckily I think we have great talent on both sides of the ball and a coach that is just/still learning how to take advantage of it all. Hopefully we use Baylor as our breakout confidence builder this week. At this point I’ve been humbled enough to say a win is a big win no matter who we play.
I know I left the Defense out of this post-game review but they played solid as always. Big games for T-Wheat and “Dave” Cha’pelle Brown. Dizon, Sims, Hippo and Abraham Wright continue to be big players making big plays at big times. Keep it up defense; eventually the offense will help themselves and give y’all a break.

Baylor will chalk up a win at CU this week. They’re a better team than their record shows and have possibly the best receivers in the big 12. Shawn Bell, baylor’s QB, has thrown for over 200 yards for the past 7 games or so… To top it off Baylor’s defense looks better than ever. The game will be close but baylor pulls out the win in the 4th quarter. Baylor 28-14.

Five games, five embarrassing losses. Each time, our fans are remarkably upbeat as if there is some hope of salvaging a lost season. Why is it that every post-game report contains something along the lines of “we are getting it, the team is clicking now and on the verge of greatness.” What exactly are they getting? At this point, I guess the definition of greatness is not finishing 0-12 in 2006. Are we really to believe that we have hope in the Big 12 North? Why can’t we just accept this for what it is – a rebuilding year with low expectations. Clearly, our product on the field is nothing more. I’m as optimistic as the next Buff fan that things will eventually turn around, but the only bowl this team will be going to in 2006 is the toilet.

I agree – I’m a proud Buff fan and bleed black and gold. However, I think some of the fans are getting a little too carried away thinking that we have a chance here. I love this site and enjoy reading the comments, but I think some of our fans are either fresh out of school or are too intoxicated to comprehend how our team is performing on Saturdays. I recently read that someone compared Bernard Jackson to Vince Young – um, last time I checked Young had the ability to produce more yardage by himself than our beloved Beefaloes produce in three games. Not sure I agree, but I love the enthusiasm. If we can sneak out wins against Baylor and KU, that will be amazing. I’m curious to know who will score more points against us – OU or Nebraska? Perhaps another repeat of Bernard Jackson’s, excuse me, Vince Young’s Big 12 Championship offensive performance.

First of all, I’ve despised CU For many years. I think it goes back to the 19-19 tie in ’91. Thats my first memory of how low CU fans can be. For those of you who don’t remember, students pelted the field with snow balls as NU attempted the game winning field goal. As for your team this year, I’m not enjoying this. I’m hoping you folks get it together and return. It’s much more enjoyable watching the Huskers beat a ranked CU Team. Have faith and I’m sure Hawk will turn it around. It’ll take some time. Don’t expect him to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Hang in there and we’ll see you in Lincoln. – Ryan Kozal

“Shoulder to shoulder…..”
Now is not the time to give up. The black and gold need our support now more than ever. It’s easy to be a fan when your team is 5-0. Without battling adversity, you’ll never reach your full potential.

programs have ups and downs. It’s good to see the steady improvements the team has made week after week. The Buffs will soon compete with and beat the big schools if the improvements continue. It’ll be good to see the Buffs contend for a national championship, and not just a conference championship. Through the good and the bad Buff-4-life

“It’ll be good to see the Buffs contend for a national championship, and not just a conference championship” You crazy delusion fools. The Buffs are 0-5! What improvements? You couldn’t even compete for a Division I-AA championship as shown in your game with Montana State! The Buffs almost make me embarassed to be a Big 12 fan! Yes programs have their ups and downs, but 0-5? That’s more than just down, that’s below sea level and sinking like a brick.

I think Oregon Buff meant that the Buffs will eventually compete at a high level, but not now (or even next season). I agree that the Buffs are a work in progress, and that Hawk has a plan – it will just take some time. I, like other fans, am confident that we will eventually RTD. I’m from Boulder and went to CU and recieved my bachelor’s and doctorate, so nobody needs to tell me to keep the faith – I’m just being realistic. You can “ra ra” all you want Buff Fans, but we need to look towards the future. Let Hawk get some good recruiting classes in place the next two seasons, and we should be in good shape for 2008 or 2009. For you fans who are still positive about this season, well, you have spirit – but a two win season (at best) is nothing to cheer about. We lost to MSU for cryin out loud (who in turn lost to perennial powerhouse Chadron State)! My son’s varsity football team could have put up 20 points against the Buffs that first week! Jackson to Sprague will not go down in CU lore as one of our most famous connections – this offense and these upperclassmen are clearly not the answer. Lets take this losing season and build on it. It will be quite the story for ESPN to analyze how we were a toilet team in 2006 and bounced back in 2008. It will take time, but don’t patronize the Buffs by making everyone believe they are better than they are and that they are doing great this year. Like Big 12 Dump CU said previously, we are 0-5, and our schedule isn’t getting any easier. 2-10 is my prediction. OU will put up 50 points in 3 quarters, and Nebraska will embarrass us in front of a national audience. Sorry to say it, but if you are a true fan, you can’t honestly look yourself in the mirror and disagree. Like our beloved Cub fans say, wait ’til next year.
