Buffs Lose 13-14 to Georgia
filed in Post-game on Sep.24, 2006
Well, I’m not one to sugar coat things. All this talk how great we looked; how fortunate Georgia is to escape with a win; how close this team is to a win; all end with the same result; WE LOST. Sure the offense showed signs of life, for the first half anyway. In the second half it became obvious Georgia coaches adjusted the defense to account for the weaknesses exposed by the Buffs small playbook. At time Bernard Jackson looked like the second coming of Vince Young, at times he looked like the guy that started against ASU. But at no point did he ever throw a good deep ball. The few times deep passes were attempted the Buffs receivers were either well covered or the ball was poorly thrown. Hugh Charles looked good again and you get the feeling he could be one of those backs that could go the distance every time he touches the ball. But again the Buffs are just too inconsistant. The offense that had made such great strides and looked so good in the first half failed to pick up key first downs in the 4th quarter when the game could have been sealed.
The defense once again looked great. Shutting out the #9 ranked Bulldogs for 3+ quarters. They forced turnovers, got a quarterback benched and stuffed the run. Not until Georgia benced starting quarterback Matthew Stafford in favor of Joe Cox did the defense look human. Once Cox entered the Buffs pressure got there just a tad too late. The Georgia receivers made great catches instead of drops. Despite the spark Cox provided the Buffs D stood strong and came up with 2 4th down stops inside of the redzone. As the game clock continued to tick down it almost appeared that those two stops would cost Georgia the game, or at worst a shot at overtime. But, the Buffs offense failed to get energized by the great defense and pick up a couple of first downs to take some time off the clock and put field position back in our favor.
Game balls go to tight end Riar Geer and offense, for really stepping it up and becoming a go to guy for Jackson and George Hypolite for coming up with a couple sacks and recovering a fumble. Next up the Buffs open confernce travel to play Missouri(4-0, 0-0).

Jackson played an excellent game considering what he was asked to do. He was asked to go in and beat the 9th ranked team in the nation with little room for era. For the most part, he did exactly that. He threw no interceptions, exept the 1 at the end of the game and took no key losses. But the fact remains that if you ask Big 12 school’s quarterback to not lose the game, somewhere in your plan, someone else is going to lose it for you. This can be seen in the game on Saturday. Colorado did not try to win that game when they were up 13-0; they tried to not lose. There is a difference.
The first thing that was obvious is that they never tried to go deep with the lead. Coach Hawkins and his staff continued to call conservative play after play. You would think that the 9th ranked team is going to catch up with the roll out option play, and the quarterback option. There were no attempts to even throw the ball to a reciever in the opening 3 quarters, that’s frustating. Being a former football player, I know corners will start to sit on routes and safeties will come up in the box to protect against the run. That is what happened. You have to challenge them in order to keep them honest and in their position. Everyone knows that you are not going to complete a high percentage of those plays, but, you have to throw them.
So, if the Buffs are going to win this year, they have to open their playbook to at least feature a reciever. Tightends are good, and they serve a purpose; however, they bring players in the box because they are not deep threats. So, throw the ball to the recievers and let them touch it at least three times a game.

As a Georgia Bulldog, I just have to say Colorado played a great game. You played well enough to win. You deserved to win. You just didn’t. Now it’s crossroads time. Does the Colorado team take this as a positive and realize they have the talent to play with anybody? Or do they fold the tent and lay down. I hope it’s the former not the later. You’ve still got the conference to play for, and I wish you all the luck in the world. Thanks for a close up look at Ralphie, and a gut check of a game.

The second coming of Vince Young???? One of the most pathetic statements ever made. 0-5 after Mizzou gets done mauling the ralphettes.

cusucks, I said at times, as in at his very very best, I also stated that he does not have the arm strength that Young has or the consistancy.

Im not a big Colorado fan, but after watching them play UGA last weekend, I think Coach Hawkins has a chance to do some great things there. I don’t think the season is over for the Buffs. I just read Coach Hawkins’ blog entry on the NCAA Football blog, and he motivated me to wanna suit up and play for him. I’m sure he’s going the have the players ready for the next game. http://everygamecounts.blogspot.com/2006/09/jumping-into-fire-dan-hawkins-blogs.html
