Welcome to the Mile High Showdown.
This rivalry game is usually a loss-loss type situation for the Buffs – losing the game means that CU faces an uphill battle for the remainder of the season trying to regain respect, and a win matters little in the grand scheme of things. This year is no different. After scheduling a “patsy” and losing last week, the Buffs face the real possibility of starting this season 0-2.
The big question this weekend – can the Buffs fill the void left by last week’s devastating loss? It wouldn’t matter if the opponent this weekend was CSU, Baylor, or Texas, the top priority will be for the Buffs to unite as a team and to play up to their potential.
On offense, QB James Cox needs to step it up. With his confidence shaken, he must focus on this game as if it were the last game of his career (probably a lot of truth to that). He needs support from the receivers, who must catch the passes that Cox delivers. Last weeks loss can’t be handed to Cox alone, the entire offense was inept.
The defense needs to step it up as well. Montana State made plays against the Buffs defense when it mattered, and the Buffs had no answer. CU cornerback Lorenzo Simms admitted yesterday that the Buffs denfense didn’t give Montana State enough credit, possibly resulting in the humiliating loss last Saturday. If the Buffs assume they can defeat the Rams, they will lose.
Forget last week, forget the rivalry, the Buffs simply must find a way to win the game! This game is about rebuilding confidence and uniting under Coach Hawkins.
The game will be televised nationally by OLN and regionally by CSTV. Kickoff is at 3:00pm mountian time.
Go Buffs!
