Hawkins names Cox starting quarterback
filed in Depth Chart on Aug.20, 2006
Sunday evening head coach Dan Hawkins announced that senior James Cox will open the season under center for the Buffaloes. Cox was injured much of spring practice and dropped to third on the depth chart. But Cox worked hard off the field to learn the new offense and to be ready for fall camp. In camp it was thought juniors Brian White and Bernard Jackson would compete for the job. White stayed atop the depth chart for most of camp and didn’t do anything negative to lose the job, but Cox’s ability to lead the offense was more consistant. Jackson has the most athletic ability of the three quarterbacks, however, his throwing needs improvement. Hawkins called the race “razor thin”, but in the end Cox appeared to be more efficient moving the offense and won the job. Hawkins is now in the delicate situation where he has two quarterbacks that can play and if Cox struggles how long to stick it out before bringing in White

I’m willing to trust Hawk on this one. He wasn’t there last year, knew about the bowl performance, but still chose Cox being an objective outsider. If the guy earned it in camp, then give him the shot, but please perform in game-time situations.
Go Buffs!

Have to agree wholeheartedly 98 Buff. At this point, we don’t know Hawk nor his offensive scheme and we don’t know what he’s looking for in that system or even how well he judges talent. I’m not sure we have a stand-out QB at this point; it very well could have been a lesser of 3 evils situation. So we take his word for it and we pray both Cox and Hawk know what they’re doing.

Good points, also in the bowl game we still had Shawn Watson calling the plays and we all know how well that worked.

My day was going so well and then you had to bring up that Shawn Watson guy.

While I trust Hawkins and his decisions, I’m a little concerned about this choice. Cox has yet to do much in a game situation. Hopefully, he can step it up and prevent the possibility of revolving QBs throughout the season. That would be a recipe for disaster.

Did anyone else watch the Champs Sports Bowl? He couldn’t complete a pass to save his life. Was his thumb broken before the game? I personally think White is the guy–strong arm, more athletic, can make plays on the move.
In Hawk we trust….
