CU announced the addition of a home-and-home series with the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. The series will start at Folsom Field on September 22, 2007 (the FSU game previously scheduled for the 22nd has been moved to Sept 15th) and then move to Yager Stadium in Oxford Ohio on September 12, 2009. The game in 2007 will be the first ever meeting of the two teams and only the second time the Buffs have played a MAC team.
The RedHawks climbed from relative obscurity to a near household name a couple of years ago thanks to the play of “Big” Ben Roethlisberger who led them to a near perfect season, a MAC conference championship and a big time win over Louisville in the 2003 GMAC Bowl enroute to a 10th place ranking in the AP polls. The RedHawks repeated as conference champs in 2004 posting another impressive W filled record before losing a heartbreaker to ISU in the 2004 Independence Bowl. After the 2004 season the architect of the previous two seasons, head coach Terry Hoeppner, jumped ship for the Hoosiers. Hoeppner was replaced in 2005 by Shane Montgomery who managed to lead a senior laden team to a 7-4 record but failed to be invited to a bowl game. The RedHawk’s new recruiting class wasn’t outstanding this year and they’ll have a relatively young cadre of players throughout the roster so it may be another tough season for them. However, expect those players to get some valuable experience and be ready to rise to the occasion in 2007 when they visit Boulder.
