Hawkins nails down staff
filed in Coaching on Jan.13, 2006
The Hawk finally has everything together as he hits the final weeks of recruiting for the Colorado Buffaloes. Here is how eveything shapes out.
Mark Helfrich – Offensive Corrdinator (ASU)
Eric Keisau – Wide Receivers (Cal)
Chris Strausser – Offensive Asst (Boise State)
Kent Riddle – Offensive Asst (Boise State)
Darian Hagan – Running Backs (CU)
Ron Collins – Defensive Cordinator (Boise State)
Romeo Bandison – Defensive Line (Boise State)
Brian Cabral – Linebackers (CU)
Greg Brown – Secondary (New Orleans Saints)
These are the details I’ve got so far. There are few names missing here and there. No word on whether Eric McCready or Donnell Leomiti will still be with the team as assistants either.
Best news of the day – Shawn Watson is no longer with the Buffs! He has been hired as the Tight Ends coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Also Bill Inge was hired by San Diego State

I think it’s hilarious that so many Buffs fans revel in the fact that Shawn Watson is now an assistant at Nebraska. It will be fun to see the look on his face next year in Lincoln when the Husker’s new west coast offense destroys the Buffs! (again)

The Buffs don’t want to admit it but they will miss the recruiting successes, especially in Texas, that Shawn Watson brought to the Buffs and will now bring to the Huskers. Plus he’ll have plently of on hand already talent to work with in the T.E. position with Matt Herian returning next year after a year out with a broken leg. As long as he’s not running the offense or calling plays, which he won’t, it is a great hire for NU!

I think a lot of CU supporters and alumni like to scapegoat Watson and Klatt for all of the Buffs woes of recent. Whatever makes them feel better I guess! I was under the impression that Klatt held many many CU football records? But most Buffs I’ve talked to act as if he was an embarassment to the program. Personally I think the problems are much deeper both in personnel and the player and fan attitudes. I do hope for the Big 12 and the North in particular that Hawk can pull it all together. But he’s got his work cut out for him!

Hey Husker Pete, Where did you get your info on Watsons “recruiting success”? Watson is a very below average recruiter, probable the weakest on our old staff. Wristen was the tight ends coach and the coach who brought future NLF tight end Klopfenstein to CU. Watson only recruited one player in last years class. Im talking about, a two star QB prospect from the powerhouse state of Kansas. Watson is stuck up, an OK coach and a below avg. recruiter.

Whew! Keep up the ‘smoldering hot’ Buffs recruiting!
January 19th, 2006 on 5:16 pm
The article about the Buffs ‘smoldering hot’ recruiting effort is very funny. Everyone should be worried that we have zero 5 star recruits coming in and zero 4 star recruits coming in. There is a long road ahead and CU is not out of the woods yet by any stretch of the imagination.

Joel klatt wasn’t very good just for your info. His stats didn’t prove much, he’s not a very accurate thrower and has a weak arm. He was never prepared for big games (nebraska, texas)., He didn’t have much confidence in those games at all, in fact he seemed scared and unprepared. White looks to be the better Q. Had he had more opportunity to play against Clemson, Colorado would’ve probably won that game. But, who could blame barnett for starting Joel in 2005 season, he was a captain and a senior and a returning starter…

This is not a coaches game. this is a players game. Better recruits = better team = better record = better opportunity for National Championship. Hawkins has to go out there and compete against Oklahoma and Texas for recruits. Though deal, but someone has to do it, and I believe Hawkins can. However bringing in these 2-3 star players aren’t going to cut it.
Never settle for 2nd best. Always shoot for 1st. It’s a standard you should set for yourself. They’re not going to just give it to us. We have to go out and take it for ourselves.
January 24th, 2006 on 6:11 pm
Oh and by the way i don’t think this Colorado team can get any worse that this. Losing to Nebraska by 60, Texas by 70… that’s pretty bad.
January 24th, 2006 on 6:28 pm
WoW!!! this is awesome!! Colorado has Eight 3 star recruits… Count that., EIGHT!! I can’t believe it, how do they do that? I was counting on maybe two or three 2 stars and a whole bunch of 1′s and NR’s. This is really a big turn around. I’m soo excited. i think we’re going to win the WAC. Oh, wait a minute… nevermind., we’re in the BIG12. Scratch that thought.

Wow, you guys are ridiculous. Hawkins has been in Boulder for under a month and you’re already blaming him for our recruiting woes. Granted, right now we have only three star commits and below, but we do have a few four stars out there.
Secondly, a recruits star ranking isn’t necessarily a certain predictor of success. Mason Crosby was a three star (he turned out OK), and Reggie Bush was a four star (you might have heard of him). Have some faith, Hawk will get it done. He can win with lesser talent as well – he proved that in Boise.
The Buffs are on the way back.
January 25th, 2006 on 4:10 pm
So much for Ricky Thenarse! Go Huskers!!!
January 26th, 2006 on 1:31 pm
Yes a “4 star” player could turn out to be a “5 star” player like Reggie Bush, but as of right now CU doesn’t have ANY “4 star” commits, not one. And Mason Crosby is ok, but by no means a superstar player, I fail to see the point. I’m not blaming Hawk for the recruiting woes, but I am realistic that CU is devoid of big time talent and looks to remain in that situation for the visible future. The Big 12 is much much different league that Hawk has dealt with, the depth of talent is going to present any new coach lacking talented players with a problem.
January 26th, 2006 on 1:37 pm
The Buffs aren’t on the way back. I can’t believe you people think that Dan Hawkins is somehow going to magically fix the lack of talent, rampant corruption, digusting violent fan base, and serious financial problems that have all but destroyed the CU Football program. Good luck with that, boys!
January 26th, 2006 on 5:10 pm
Chris-
Magic doesn’t enter in too it. Please stop believing everything you read. What exactly is this “rampant corruption?” you write about. Last I heard, dispite all the scurtiny that has been brought against the Buffs, no impropieties have been found. No rape charges (dispite 5 times the scurtiny the average rape charge gets) were filed, the audit found nothing much. The media scandals that huskers like to talk about are a lot of smoke and not any fire. From football players I’ve talked to, CU runs one of the cleaner programs around, practically angelic compared to most of the Southern teams.
As for recuiting, Hawkins has managed to salvage a semi-respectable class that was ruined by Barnett’s contract situation. Most schools had there classes filled out by the time Hawkins was hired while Barnett had around 8 commits. Next year will be the test as to Hawkin’s ability to bring in talent. As for our “digusting violent fan base” this seems to be a common complaint from puritainical husker fans. It’s also simply absurd. Go to football game in any big city in the country, you’ll see worse. Besides, this is football, not a bake sale.
Magic or “good luck” isn’t the fix. If Hawkins is the coach I think he is, the Buffs should be back to respectability within a couple of years. And even if he’s not the coach I think he is, at least he’s not Callahan.
January 26th, 2006 on 5:50 pm
You are right in that Hawkins is not Callahan. Hawkins has never been an NFL head coach nor led a team to the Super Bowl. Callahan is a proven coach whose resume posts a little more than a successful stint at Boise State in an obscure and less than impressive conference.
As for the corruption, there is far more going on in Boulder than of couple of rape allegations. Although I am curious to know if you completely deny the on the record testimony and depositions of several girls (9 young women at last count)? And how about providing prostitues for recruits (not that it did much good)?
Or how about unaccounted for and misappropriated funds and accounting ‘lapses’ totalling in the hundreds of thoasands of dollars?
But mostly I don’t think any intelligent football fan can deny that the Buffs fans are by far and away the worst fans in the sport. Consistently raining dangerous debris onto the field, bullying and intimidating visiting fans, slashing tires and destroying property of out of state fans are all a regular occurance at Folsom Field. And as a matter of absolute fact I have been to football games at dozens of stadiums throughout the U.S. and nothing I have seen anywhere from any other team even compares to the pathetic behavior I have personally experienced in Boulder (as have many many many friends and acquantinces).
One need only “google” the term “Colorado Football Scandals” and when I last checked about 239,000 articles pop up, many from very credible sources.
So in response to your statements, Peter, I stand by the assertion that the Buffs do indeed need some magic and good luck to restore the program. Believe it or not, I hope for the sake of the conference that it does happen. But to deny these events and behaviors is not only ridiculous to the nth degree but also insulting and degrading to women everywhere.
Please stop defending the corruption of the past and start helping your team one fan at a time change it’s national reputation.

I’m by no means degarding women. I’m sticking to the presumption of innocence in our legal system. Something must people seem to forget when the defendants are black. Fact is no indictments, no convictions. Nothing.
January 27th, 2006 on 5:17 am
The Buffs are on their way back, but it will take several years. Our turnaround will take at least 3 seasons. I’m glad to see the Huskers bringing in strong recruiting classes, and I look forward to watching meaningful Colorado-Nebraska games again. We in Buffalo nation should be happy that Nebraska is returning to power – it strengthens the Big 12 North – and in the same breath Nebraska fans should want a strong Colorado team to challenge them.
Hawkins isn’t Barnett – he’s a class act. He will turn our program into what it should’ve been all along – a respectable group of players. Go Buffs!

I was just at scout.com and saw that Darian Hagen Jr. committed to Cal. Talk about disappointment, I thought he would attend Colorado with his dad’s success there and the fact he coaches there now. This one stings a little. Oh well.
January 30th, 2006 on 12:24 pm
Klatt still sucks…Brian White, where was he in Sept? Why would Watson/Barnett keep him on the sidelines thru the whole season? Because Watson and Barnett are idiots! Talk about politics and holding grudges…just ask Ochs and Houston.
And this years recruits…would have a hard time making CSU’s team. Clouds are brewing …expect a 7 or 8 game loss season. NO O-Line, No 25 carry/game back, No speed on corners and No TE’s.
THANK GOD CROSBY COMING BACK.
January 30th, 2006 on 7:19 pm
Crosby can’t carry the load alone, dark clouds are brewing indeed.
July 21st, 2006 on 10:08 am
Craig Ochs? Do you mean the Craig Ochs who passed up almost every oportunity to play because he was always sidelined with phantom injuries? If I recall even Barnett told him he was a pussy. O Boy! Houston sure showed the Buffs what they were missing at CSU! He sure could bust out thos -3 yard gains. Barnett was not the downfall of the Buffs, the Buffs were the downfall of the Buffs. They must really be pathetic when the head coach of Boise State is considered a savior. Boise state has had alot of success in the past few years. Then again when you play high school caliber football teams every Saturday thats not much of an acomplishment! Welcome to the BIG XXII Hawkins.
Go CU!
