Dan Hawkins named coach
filed in Big XII on Dec.16, 2005
Dan Hawkins was named the new head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team on Friday. He is a welcome addition to the football program. We’ll post details on his contract and carreer in the coming weeks. In the mean time tell us what you think of Coach Hawkins. One thing that I like so far was that he demanded a larger salary pool for his assistant coaches as a requirement of his hiring.

Dan Hawkins is the perfect fit for CU. He has Boise State perenially ranked in the top 25 with
unspectactular talent. He will have CU in the top 10 before too long.

Great hire! I am excited and so are boosters and alumni. He has already pulled in a 1.5 million dollar contribution. Hopefully, that will go towards a indoor facility of some type. I think Bernard Jackson will benefit from this as well. Hawkins like mobile QBs. BJack can throw pretty well also. It would be great if Cody Hawkins tags along with his dad. GO BUFFS!

Great hire for CU! I don’t expect immediate results, but I can definately invision CU football challenging Nebraska for the Big 12 North title each year. I say in a year or two that Nebraska, and hopefully Colorado, will be at a level to rival the Big 12 South powers.
It’s a great hire for the Buffs because everything I’ve heard about Hawkins says he’s a PR guy, and that he does things the right way. What a breath of fresh air. About time we hear “right thing” and “Colorado” in the same sentence.
Once again… Goodbye to Gary “the Slimeball” Barnett.

Lord almighty – I want to thank God for taking the time to grant my wishes when it came to find finding such a wonderful leader, and more importantly person, to take over the program. Not since the days of couch make has this program really stood for something, and now I believe in the program once again. Remember – crack is whack!!!

I am from Boise. My sis is from Colorado. So I guess if Hawk was going to leave….Colorado is the place to go.
You guys scored big time.
Big impact next year for you. But two years down the road….well I hope you have your season tickets.

Unbelievable fit for CU. You are extremely fortunate to have Dan Hawkins (Coach Hawk) as your coach, leader and mentor. He is a tremendous individual and know how to win on and off the field. He will have a heisman trophy winner in his tenure. He teaches boys how to become men. They will learn more about life than they will football and they will learn a great deal about football.
To Cu Nation: Prepare to work hard as a team, fans and sponsors. He accepts nothing but the best and will get it because he deserves it and has earned it. You will win a national championship during his tenure. It is going to be awesome to watch this unfold. Have a great time being apart of this rebirth. Get your season tickets, because by the time you figure out what is going to happen there won’t be any left for sale.

The hiring of Dan Hawkins is a tremendous boost for Colorado Football. I was one of Hawk’s college coaches at UC Davis, and he is one of the finest individuals in college football. Hawk is a tremendous football coach, but more than that he is an awesome man, father and husband. The enthusiam and professionalism Dan will bring will have the Buff’s battling for a championship year in and year out.

When will Coach Hawk start making decisions about who stays and who goes on the staff? There is still some house cleaning that needs to be done in order for the new regime to have maximum impact!

Clemson is going to dominate the Buffs like Texas and Nebraska!
December 27th, 2005 on 9:15 am
Colorado 31, Clemson 28

Go Clemson! Go Boston College! Go Huskers! Go Longhorns! Go Northwestern!
December 29th, 2005 on 8:45 am
Watching the NU game last night got me excited because we are seeing the rebirth of the Big 12 North powers. Nebraska will be a one or two loss team next year, no doubt about it.
I see Colorado following the same path as the Huskers over the next three years. We will have some growing pains, but as Hawkin’s recruits are mixed in we will be a power too.
Hooray for the Big 12 North!!! I personally have fallen tired of hearing about how weak it is.
December 29th, 2005 on 2:13 pm
Well said Iowa Buff! Here’s to the rebirth of the Big 12 North!!
January 4th, 2006 on 11:44 am
Your sister LISA is one HOT little nugget!!
Go Buffs for sure!!!!
January 6th, 2006 on 6:42 pm
Where are the Buffs in the preseason 06 Top 25 estimates by the pundits? No respect! Colorado may (emphasis on may) be in rebuilding mode. But they are going to get waxed in 06 by at least half of the Big 12 North! Too bad!!
January 6th, 2006 on 10:44 pm
To “Being Realistic”
Waxed by who? Even with Barnett we managed to dominate the weak Big 12 North. You really think that a better coach with the same athletes (except a better quarterback) is going to loose where we’ve been winning for years?
January 7th, 2006 on 8:24 am
How about Nebraska (again), Missouri (no way the Buffs defense will be able to stop Brad Smith this time), and at least one of Kansas State, Iowa State, or Kansas? You Buffs fans really think that Hawk is an immediate “magic bullet” for all of the massive weaknesses in the CU program both on and off the field? No chance. Rome wasn’t built in a day. And Colorado is no Rome!
January 7th, 2006 on 8:31 am
Okay, I thought Brad Smith was a junior. I’ll give CU only two losses in the north in 06. That’s the best you can hope for! And who is this “better” quarterback than Klatt? Haven’t seen anything on the field after watching 4 CU games this year.
January 9th, 2006 on 8:10 am
Although it is understandable that many Buffs fans are excited and hopeful for the future, I agree that no coach is going to be able to come in and miraculously fix all of the corruption and mediocrity that has saturated the CU Football program. It will take many many years to get back on our feet.
January 9th, 2006 on 9:02 am
Who?, Next Year’s New Starters:
QB: Cody Hawkins, Brian White, or Bernard Jackson (all have more natural talent than Klatt)
RB: Thomas Perez or Maurice Greer (both bigger than Hugh Charles who will do much better as a change-up/big play back rather than an every down ball carrier)
WR: Blake Mackey, Dusty Sprague, Patrick Williams, Jarrell Yates, Tim Lemon (a much faster receiving corps than the group we’ve fielded the last few years)
TE: Our biggest question mark.
Kicker: Please Mason, stay!
Defense: In good hands. We return an amazing linebacking crew and every starter from the secondary.
January 9th, 2006 on 12:13 pm
I don’t know. An untested and unexperienced question mark at QB, and a defensive squad that got punished by Nebraska and Texas doesn’t bode well…
January 9th, 2006 on 12:26 pm
Next year will have a few glimmers of hope, but we will lose games for sure. I’m hoping for a 6-6 or 7-5 season, I don’t see us doing any better than that for a couple years.
We finally are moving in the right direction though.
January 10th, 2006 on 10:35 am
Buffs will be 3-5ish in the Big 12 next year best case scenario.
January 11th, 2006 on 9:13 am
Billy,
You truly are an idiot. The Buffs will be at least 6-2 in Big XII play this year, and will be playing for the Big XII Cahmpionship on December 2nd, likely against the Horns again…
Pull your head out of your husk.
January 11th, 2006 on 10:39 am
Buff Proud – ’98,
You my friend are the idiot. Your Buffs program is scraping the bottom of the conference now at every level. There is NO chance the Buffs will be 6-2 and there is even less chance you will play for the Big 12 title. You’ve lost your quarterback, your coach, and you are riding a tide of pathetic mediocrity that is evident in your program and your fans. Nebraska will crush you again with a returning Zac Taylor and a big time offense that has finally arrived. Dream on big shooter!
January 11th, 2006 on 11:13 am
I am a true Colorado fan, and therefore I cannot stand the Huskers. However, the Huskers have made the transition and have turned the corner to being able to compete with the likes of Texas and Oklahoma. Colorado is just being the journey, and their road will be tougher because we don’t have the prestige that NU has.
I predict a 3-5 or 4-4 Big 12 record next year. As I’ve said before, Hawkins will have them ready to play – and there will be glimpses of future success – but we don’t have the talent to beat the best consistently.
As much as I hate to say it, I’m glad that Nebraska is back. It will help restore the Big 12 North’s reputation.
Go Buffs!
January 11th, 2006 on 1:18 pm
Nebraska is not back.
Let’s remember that their coach is Bill Callahan, the same bumbling fool who once proclaimed his own team “the dumbest team in America.”
Nebraska just hired Shawn Watson (great choice *laugh*, no seriously)
Is taking 3rd in the weak Big 12 North now considered being back?
Nebraska plays USC in its noncoference schedule. Somehow I think they might find this a tougher game to win than mighty 2005 non-conference foes Wake Forest and Maine.
Predicted Big 12 North Finish, 2006:
1. Iowa State (let someone else get smoked by Texas or Oklahoma for a change)
2. Colorado
3. Kansas
4. Nebraska
5. Kansas State
6. Missouri
January 11th, 2006 on 1:24 pm
They crushed Colorado 30-3 there 98, how does that make CU ‘better’ than Nebraska?
CU gets crushed by NU, Texas, and “Clemson” and you think they are capable of beating a rising Nebraska team that returns almost all of their talent, is nationally ranked, and is bringing in yet another nationally ranked recruting class?
You have no clue, man. Be realistic. Nebraska has tradition and pride that has led them back. Face it Buffy, you’re screwed in Lincoln next year. Guaranteed!
January 11th, 2006 on 2:44 pm
Taking 3rd in the Big 12 North is indeed not “back”. Finishing the season with hard fought character filled wins against K-State, Colorado, and Michigan is. Incredible improvement and consistency in a new and complex offense is. Leading the nation in scoring defense and sacks/rushes is. Bill Callahan is for real. And for all of you whiners out there he did take the Raiders to the Super Bowl, and he will prove to be a contender in the NCAA at the hightest level. So let’s put things in perspective, Bill has a huge 2 year head start on Hawk. And Nebraska still is an infinitely more storied and heart filled program than CU ever has been or ever will be.
January 11th, 2006 on 2:52 pm
Shawn Watson was hired as an assistant coach working with the T.E.s at Nebraska – not as offensive coordinator or in any substantial position. I don’t really see a problem with that. The core coaching staff remains intact and Watson’s involvement will be extremely minimal until he can prove himself.
January 11th, 2006 on 2:59 pm
Nebraska sucks! The cornholes are not back at all… I am betting that all you Nebraska people will be calling for a public lynching of Callahan by the end of the season.
Prediction for CU vs. NU game on 11/24/2006:
CU dominates NU 38-17.
The “husker nation” will wheep in 2006.
January 11th, 2006 on 4:39 pm
On what basis of facts do you insane Buffs fans make these predictions? Based on the facts implicit in both programs at the current time, you are insane!
A realistice prediction of the 2006 CU-NU Game: 45-10 Huskers, based on an experienced returning Zac Taylor who can pass and run and scramble, 4 and 5 star wide receivers coming to Lincoln, a much improved offensive line, and an incredible returning defense! Cornholio and Buffs 98 are living in a fantasy land devoid of any realistic assesment of the conference.
January 11th, 2006 on 4:43 pm
The Huskers got better and better as the 05 season progressed. The Buffs got worse and worse. How can anyone compare the two? One team learns and improves and the other …. well they disentigrate under no leadership, no talent, and the most embarassing fan base in the sport.
Go Huskers!!!!
January 11th, 2006 on 9:00 pm
That’s what I’m talking about boys – fire it up! How long do we have to wait for next season? Truth is, both NU and CU have been mediocre for years. The good news is that both are headed in the right direction. Who the hell is Iowa State anyway?
January 12th, 2006 on 6:05 am
My prediction for the Big 12 North next year:
1. Nebraska (7-1 or 6-2)
2t. Colorado (5-3 or 4-4)
2t. Iowa State (5-3 or 4-4)
4. Kansas (3-5)
5. Missouri (2-6)
6. Kansas State (1-7)
I can see Iowa State or Colorado finishing second, depends on how a few close game go, but Nebraska has got to be the favorites to win the North.
This year. Go Ralphie!
January 12th, 2006 on 10:42 am
1. Nebraska
2. Iowa State
3. Colorado
4. Kansas State
5. Missouri
6. Kansas
January 12th, 2006 on 1:48 pm
Shawn Watson will not be calling any plays at NU. But you still have to wonder why Callahan would waste ANY of his salary budget? They don’t need him. It’ll be interesting to see what if any contributions he has to make. As long as we’re weighing in on the 06 CU-NU game. I say 64-26 Huskers! The Big Red will roll over the northern division!

According to Rivals.com the Colorado Buffaloes recruiting class ranks 72nd in the nation, even with Coach Hawkins coming in. I smell continued mediocrity in Boulder for a long time to come!

This year’s recruiting class is on Barnett’s shoulders, and I think everyone knew we weren’t drawing big name players…
Give it time Ashamed, Hawkins will bring in good (and maybe a few great) players who will restore the fans pride in CU. In three years time it will start to take shape.
One more side note:
Thank goodness Crosby is staying!!!
January 14th, 2006 on 10:30 am
Recrutting isn’t over until signing day. Hawk will salvage a decent class and things will be fine – stop worrying buffs. We’ve got the positive mojo on our side now and Tom Watson is in Nebraska.
April 6th, 2006 on 6:35 am
A suggestion for Dan Hawkins: Make Prof. Ward Churchill an offer he can’t refuse – - -to be a blocking dummy for the Buff football team. The U of C hits the highs and the lows – - -a great coach and nice guy (high) and a lousy professor and bum (low). You did the right thing hiring Dan (we hated to lose him and his family). Follow up on this piece of good judgement and can that make believe Indian fraud!
April 30th, 2006 on 3:57 pm
Can you hear that Nebraska? can you hear that Big 12? The distant sound of stampedeing buffalo is drawing ever closer. It gets louder and louder everyday that Dan “Couch Hawk” Hawkins is at the reins. By the time this season starts the cameras covering every game in the nation will be blurred and their stadiums toppled by the thunderous roar that will eminate from within the state of Colorado. Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri; I’m afraid you have but one choice; get out of the way or forever become dust on the hooves of the buffalo! To the fans at C.U. Beef up your stadium, make room for Boise because we’re not done standing (never sitting) behind the Hawk. Just as The Big 12 and the rest of the nation will soon find out, Boise and now C.U. know “The Hawk” and his Buffalo will soon lay waste to all in their path. Here in Boise we will all watch the Buffalos stampede to a Big 12 championship while watching our Boise State Broncos stampede through an undefeated season and a Fifth Straight WAC Championship under the influence of Pete’s Poison. The Dan Hawkins dynasty continues to be forged! J Money in Boise

I cannot hear anything from Colo right now. The only thing I hear is a bunch of crying from the Buffalo cry babies!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yea, Tell Coach Hawk, Welcme to the BIG 12!!! Maybe the buffs will win 3 games next year lol.
