Goodbye Gary

The University will hold a press conference at 6:30 this evening to announce the dismissal of Coach Gary Barnett as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team. It has not been announced who will lead the team at the Champs Sports Bowl.
UPDATE:Atlhetic Director Mike Bohn has decided to change coaches at the University Colorado. Gary Barnett’s heart will always be in Colorado. He is disappointecd to no longer be the head coach for the Buffaloes. Gary will accept a $3 million settlement from the University. He hopes to be remembered and appreciated for the balance he has brought to the program on and off the field.
Coach Barnett has been given an opportunity to coach the bowl, he has yet to make a decision, but is doubtful that he will guide the Buffs to the Champs Sports Bowl Game. Barnett plans to coach again but he has no idea when or where. The State of Colorado pays assistant coaches on a month to month basis. All assistant coaches are guaranteed tenure though the end of December.
Gary Barnett finished with this “The University of Colorado is a gold mine. The opportunites for the program in Colorado as good as anywhere in the country.” Gary Barnett was eloquent, emotional, and a true class act throughout the entire press conference.
Mike Bohn apologized to all Colorado players, fans, and boosters for the way this transpired in the media. Bohn is committed to bring a great coach to inspire players at the University of Colorado. The search process has already begun and they will try to move as quickly as possible. “No single factor or incident led to this decision.” “On many many fronts it was time to make a change.” Bohn talked of the loss of swagger and confidence throughout the program.
I’m pleased with the way this was handled professionally on both sides and I am excited for the future at the University of Colorado.

I can’t believe he’s not going to coach the bowl game and finish out the season. I don’t know who made that decision, the University or Barnett.
Frankly, I hope Barnett made that decision because it provides further proof that getting rid of him is the right thing to do. Any coach that would decide not to coach his seniors and the rest of his team in their final game doesn’t have the right mindset to be a coach.
If it was the University that made that decision…shame on them. That decision would offer further proof that the Athletic Department is at a total loss when it comes to understanding how a football team works and that many of our problems do indeed stem directly from them.
Or…I guess option 3 would be that they announce Barnett will be coaching the team in the bowl game…
Either way, the editing staff here at Buffs.tv is prepared to submit a group resume for the position. Coaching by committee.

It will be the university’s decision, and it’s a good one. The smartest thing would be to announce the new coach tonight, which they won’t. But at least by letting him go now, we’ll have a chance to sign a FEW recruits who would otherwise be scared off by the rumors.

Just hope that they dont name shawn watson as “interim head coach”… wed be better off keeping Gary.

Mariucci.

I bet Cabral will be interim coach. Just like he was during the suspension.

I like Bohn…he sounds enthusiastic about this…says he’s gonna get a great coach…will be interesting where the money will come from for that

Butch Davis … with all those South Florida connections … he has my vote

Let’s remember Gary Barnett for the his class and ask our new AD to remember what he experienced tonight with Gary. He could have taken the classless approach that ‘our’ coach prior to Gary had, slivering out the back door with nothing more than a wave to his players. Gary Barnett did the University of Colorado right and like Bohn stated, it is in the best interest of CU to make this move now! Our best to Coach Barnett and our request to Mike, is to make us proud of our next coach! It’s in everyone’s best interest for Gary to move on and CU to move into the next phase, for recruitings’ sake and the best of the program.
Go Buffs!

Whoever said Neuheisel should be shot. The thought of Mariucci brought a smile to my face, but I don’t think he’d be interested. It had better be someone with some thick skin, because I fear we might be in a “re-building” state for a couple of years. I wish we would’ve scooped up Tyrone Willingham. Who else do you guys think?

The more I think about it, not only is money an issue for a big name coach, but is Colorado still an attractive enough job to get that big name coach and keep him here. It’d suck to land a Mike Price only to have this be a stepping stone on his career rebuilding…he bolted washington st for alabama once before, so he might coach here a few years and move on to greener pastures….unfortunately loyality in college football is hard to find

Solich would be ironic…..

The best thing to do for the future of Colorado football would be to hire a big name coach (knowing he will probably leave soon after) and also have Dave Logan (Mullen High football coach) be involved in some aspect of the team (coordinator, assistant, etc.). Logan could then take over as head coach and be there for a long time. I still believe it should be Butch Davis. Great recruiter and coach. We are the only team in a BCS, big time conference looking for a coach, maybe he will take it.

Latest rumors for possible coaching opps:
Among the early names that have surfaced are: Mullen High School coach Dave Logan, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt, LSU coach Les Miles and UCLA assistant Jon Embree. Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak

thats just what we need,a guy outta high school to come coach CU…at least hed be on the same skill level as Shawn watson. One name from that denver post article today i liked was Stever Marriucci…He did wonders at Cal, got that program turned around, was an excellent coach with the 9ers, hes a real personable and emotional guy who is a real players coach, and could do wonders for recruiting…but Butch Davis i wouldnt mind seeing either!

Latest rumors are Bo Pelini may be considered for the job. That’d be ironic.

I’m truly hopeful you folks find someone who’ll turn this program around. It will be much more enjoyable when the Huskers beat a ranked Buff team.

Seriously, though. I hope Colorado gets a good coach. It would be great to have that old school rivalry back. The one with mutual respect and talented players on both sidelines.
I wonder if they are considering that coach from the KC Chiefs (what’s his name… Sanders?). His name came up when the Huskers were searching and I understand he is a great coach.
Pelini is a hell of a coach as well.
How about the coach from Fresno State, that guy is a great motivator…
Good luck!

Where did Butch Davis coach–the Browns? I can’t remember. I totally disagree with Houston Nut, and I can’t say I’d be too crazy about a coach from high school. The college game is a whole different world from high school. I’m not sure who Bo Pelini is, either. Maybe someone can help clear up some of these names for me.

For Kevin: You’re joking, right?

Yes. Has anyone else heard a rumor about a big name that would be a “Home Run” for CU?
January 9th, 2006 on 11:31 am
If HAWK in the next five years can win four div. championship one Big12 championship plus coach of the year twice CU will have made ZERO progress. The winner is Barnett
