Vickers 24 – Missouri 12

The Buffs came on strong in their 41-12 win over the Missouri Tigers. Top to bottom,Colorado had it together. QB Joel Klatt finished the day with 253 passing yards and a touchdown. Kicker Mason Crosby aced a 56-yard field goal, with plenty of room to spare. An incomplete Klatt pass on third and six drew a big cheer from Buffs fans, not because they liked the play, but because they knew that Crosby would be out to make the 56-yard attempt. “No,” was all coach Barnett said when asked if he had second thoughts about allowing the attempt.
The story of the day, however, was back Lawrence Vickers. Vickers scored 4 touchdowns and came away with a career best 85 yards. In addition to the touchdowns, Vickers was key in the special teams efforts against the Tigers. “He wanted to be in the game every snap, and you love an attitude like that,” said Barnett, “He’s got a great passion for the game and he demonstrated his versatility.”
The coaching staff got a few lucky breaks, and a little added help from the team. JJ Billingsley recovered a Tiger fumble just a few plays after a misguided onside kick. “That was huge,” joked Barnett, “especially after the head coach called an onside kick. I appreciate those guys saving my butt.” Shawn Watson’s day worked out as well, so Buffs.tv is going to take the week off busting his chops. But the percentage of run/pass options was a little higher than we are generally comfortable with.
The Buff’s D-line kept the Tigers in check as well. A lot of pre-game attention was give to Brad Smith, but the defensive team came together. “Everything kind of worked out for us today because we were able to keep him in front of us and eliminate the big plays,” said Linebacker Akarika Dawn. “We knew they were going to do some dunks and dinks, but we weren’t going to allow them to beat us deep or scramble on us and make big plays.” The Buffs held Tiger QB to a season low 16 yards on 13 rushes.
All in all a good week for the Buffs. They come away from the Missouri game 5-0 at home for the first time since they went 6-0 in 1994. The 94-yard touchdown drive was the longest scoring drive in over a year for CU. Colorado has now won 7 straight Big 12 North division games. Mason Crosby moves into 3rd for all CU career scoring. His 11 against the Tigers moves him to 215. He trails only Eric Bieniemy (254) and Jeremy Aldrich (231).
Colorado hits the road this week to take on Iowa State.
