23-3 We lost badly. Sad thing is I never felt like we were out of this game. I never felt that we were getting beat. We were just beating ourselves. How did we lose? Let me count the ways
1. Penalty after penalty after penalty. Big plays brought back, Miami drives kept alive, and turning 3rd and shorts into 3rd and forevers. We killed ourselves
2. Horrible play calling After talking all week about how our running strength was up the middle in this game on 3rd and inches we call a sweep. Loss of 4 on the play. Goodbye momentum. Also I don’t think we threw one pass down the field everything was within the 6 yard range, which got us nowhere fast. Especially because
3. We couldn’t break a tackle Every time a defender laid a hand on or near our players we went down. Breaking tackles is essential to the West Coast style offense and we couldn’t do it. I’m not sure how you coach breaking tackles, but it is very important in the Toughness category.
4. Failure to use our best players Klopfenstein, Sypnewski and Vickers. These three combined for three touches. WooHoo!
5. Turnovers Give up three turnovers and take none in and away game and you might as well forfeit. We did.
6. Failure to capitalize After shutting Miami down three and out to start the game. The Buffs promptly drive to the 7 yard line. (Yes our scripted plays actually work, it is the live play calling that sucks) The thought of scoring was too much for us. The thought of being up by 7 in Miami was too much. We choked.
The Buffs beat themselves. We are no longer among the nations elite. We are has-beens who are no longer mentioned on College Game Day. It hurts.
