The Buffs posted a big “W” Saturday night with a 39-0 shutout of the New Mexico State Aggies, a win that moves the Buffs to 2-0 for the season. This second loss of the season for the Aggies marks the first CU shutout since the Buffs beat Baylor in 2002. National television coverage forced the 8:10 kickoff time, the latest in CU history. “Our goal tonight was to get the game over by midnight,” Barnett joked. “We did that.”
Offensively, the Buffs came out strong. Quarterback Joel Klatt threw for 186 yards and two TD’s before taking a seat in the third quarter. And at that seat, Klatt found a prize. With his tenth pass completion of the game, he had become the all time leader for pass completions at Colorado. “It is really quite an honor, and in the future when I am sitting with my kids that will be a cool thing to talk about,” Klatt told reporters. “But for the present time it is just a great thing that the Buffs got the win.”
Lawrence Vickers finished the night with three touchdowns. “There was excellent blocking all day,” said Vickers, “I don’t think that when I see the goal line anyone is going to stop me.” It was also a great night for Hugh Charles (TB). Charles has beat the 100 yard mark in both of his starts for the Buffs. The last Buff to start the season with consecutive 100-yard games was Marcus Houston in 2000.
This loss marks the second for New Mexico State, who came up short last week against UTEP. Aggie quarterback Royal Gill completed 17 of 30 passes for 176 yards, which was not enough to get past the Buff Defense. A 54-yard completion in the third quarter gave Gill hope, but that faded quickly when a fumble turned the ball over two plays later. A blocked field goal, end zone interception, fake punt mishap, and a safety all contributed to the Aggies inability to put points on the board. “We have to go correct our mistakes,” Aggie Head Coach told reporters. “Sometimes you learn more by having your hat handed to you.”
The Buffs take a week off, and then play Miami, at Miami, on September 24th.
