The Colorado Buffaloes look to improve to 2-0 on the season against the New Mexico St. Aggies. Looking at the talent of each roster would suggest the Buffs win in a blowout. However, the same could be said about last weeks game where the Buffs made costly mistake after mistake and allowed the Rams a chance to win in the closing minutes. For the Buffs to win on Saturday they need to eliminate these mistakes.
When the Buffs have the ball they must eliminate stupid penalties. Hugh Charles had a fantastic day on Saturday, but had several nice runs called back. Going up against an overmatched defense should help the Buffs offensive line get their techniques straightened out. Also, look for the young receivers to continue to improve. Dusty Sprague and Patrick Williams began to make some plays in the 4th quarter last week. New Mexico St. gave up 34 points to UTEP, the team Colorado beat in the Houston Bowl last year. But the Aggies’ defense was put into tough spots by an offense that committed 4 turnovers. If the Buffs can hold on to the ball and eliminate key penalties they should have no problem putting up 35 points.
The key for the Buffs defense is going to be pressure on the quarterback. Last week Justin Holland threw interceptions when the Buffs were able to get him out of the pocket and rush his throws. When he had time to throw the Buffs secondary looked lost and very much like the weak link of the defense. The Aggies’ will throw the football, and will be a tough test for the defensive backfield of the Buffs. This should be a good test for the DB’s before heading to south Florida and the speedy Hurricane WRs. When New Mexico St. does make a completion, or on the rare running play, Colorado must make tackles. For all the hype surrounding the linebackers entering the season, they were routinely run over by CSU running backs. If the Buffs stay aggressive and make tackles they should hold this offense to 14 points.
Oh, as for special teams, I would like to see Mason Crosby hit the back of the end zone on his kickoffs. Hopefully Crosby and punter John Torp won’t need to step up like they did last weekend.
Enjoy the Halftime fireworks display!
