Practice starts tomorrow. The two-a-days are here. (although there will only be four of them this year instead of the usual six) There is plenty of reason for excitement this season.
Last season the Buffs backed into the Big XII championship only to be thoroughly embarrassed by the Sooners. It led to a unimpressive win over UTEP, in a must win bowl for the Buffs. They team could walk away proudly knowing that they were able to compete despite the horrible circumstances that surrounded the team, the coach, the school, and the state. After another spring the turmoil has lessened considerably. Mike Bohn has taken over the reins of the athletic department. Hank Brown has stepped in to guide the university and through it all Gary Barnett takes it in stride.
Barnett knows that his contract is at stake this season. He also knows that the Buffalo program needs a few big wins to step out of the also-ran category that the Big XII North has become. He’s got the players to make it happen this season. The experience, talent and toughness is all there. We will be able to watch Barnett, Watson and Hankwitz work their magic, if they’ve still got it.
We’ll get into the talent on the field in the coming weeks. But suffice it to say, the team is solid at QB, punter, kicker, and linebacker. The LB depth is astounding; reminds me of linebacker U. We’ll be watching some of these guys play on Sunday for sure. I’m not sure these guys quite have the talent of their 1991 counterparts, but you can’t argue with a little chest puffing.
Key dates on the schedule.
Sept 3rd CSU at home.
Always a must-win game for the Buffs. In-state rivalries are a highlight of the emotion that surrounds college football. And this is a biggie. It will be both teams opening game and so both teams will have to work out some kinks before getting into the flow of tackle football again. The Rams are not expected to rank high nationally this year and so this game will be that much more important to them. The Buffs need positive headlines to start off this season. A dominating game at home would do just the trick. It would also be nice to keep CSU firmly down as a second tier Colorado football squad..
Sept 24th at Miami.
Hopefully we will enter this game 2-0 and knocking on the door of a national ranking. We will be walking into the home stadium of a Top 10 team probably even Top 5. It will be our chance to shine on a national stage. We haven’t played Miami in 12 years and we will need to avenge that loss in Boulder. But most importantly a win in Miami will get us some much deserved respect. A win will have our program again walking proud. Are you going to be in Miami to respresent the Black and Gold?
Oct 8 and Oct 15 Texas A&M and Texas
If we want to quell the idea that the Big XII North is a lesser division we have to stand tall in these two games. We must emerge 1-1 and remain competitive in both games. If we fail to show up like we did in Austin in 2001 or like we did against Oklahoma last December, the pundits won’t shut up. Both of these games have to be within a 7 point margin and we have to win one. Especially after winning against these guys we should be able to roll through the rest of the season
Nov 25 Nebraska
I just hate Nebraska. Nuff Said.
I love doing the preseason predictions. It always looks so rosy.
Welcome back to Buffs.tv, sorry for the hiatus, but we are now back in action and so are the Buffs!
