I’ll be completely honest; I’m doing this post game on Tuesday because I was a little stuck on how to sum this game up. I hate to dwell on the negative especially after a win but come on…The Buffs narrowly defeated a struggling Iowa State 19-14 on Saturday to notch their first Big XII victory. It was easily one of the uglier games either team has played.
As expected, the Buffs started James Cox at QB. Cox and the Buffs offense looked lost for the most part; luckily ISU’s defense was even more lost. An ISU special teams miscue handed the ball to the Buffs on the Iowa State 11 and the Buffs found the will to convert it into 7. From that point on it was a battle of uglies. After Cox tossed an interception in the 2nd quarter the Buffs trotted Klatt back out under center. It made little difference; Klatt threw two interceptions and never found the end zone. The Buffs ended the day with 12 penalties for 104 yards, not exactly ideal. ISU managed a defensive TD off a 34 yard interception return late in the 1st half. Their other points came late in the game when they floated a pass into the end zone over the Buff’s defense.
I’d love to say the CU defense held strong and kept the Cyclones out of the end zone all but that one time, unfortunately I think the Cyclones kept the Cyclones out of the end zone more than anyone else. ISU crossed the CU 20 yard line five times in the game but failed to cross the goal line all 5 times. To add insult to injury the Cyclone’s kicking game was pathetic with two different kickers each missing short field goal tries.
The Buffs one lone star was kicker Mason Crosby (Big XII Special Teams player of the week). This just in, the kid can kick. Crosby provided the rest of CU’s points, nailing 4 field goals including a 54 yarder and a very impressive 60 yarder to break the 23-year-old school record of 58 yards. He also chipped in a 28 yarder and a 33 yarder later in the game to seal the victory. After one of the most impressive kicking performances in recent college football history (the 60 yarder made ESPN’s top 10 plays) all Crosby had to say was, “it was a pretty good day for me…” Amazing and humble, another CU kicker playing on Sundays.
Coming into the game the CU coaching staff was predicting a break out game. Unless they meant a break out to becoming worse, it didn’t quite live up to expectations. Hopefully, the return of the old Joel Klatt instead of Captain Joel Klatt will spark this much hyped and sorely needed break out against No. 17 Texas A&M this Saturday. I love you Buffs but please give us something to be proud to cheer for; it’s not easy bragging about a 5 point win over Iowa State.
