The Season is Over
filed in Tackling & Toughness on Nov.28, 2003
We lost… The lowly Huskers beat us this year and staved off our hopes of a bowl game and the joy of beating the Huskers 3 seasons straight.
Why did we lose? It’s not so diffiuclt to see. We were not the more physical team on the field this year. Back in 2001, we physically out-muscled, out-hussled and out-toughed. This year we couldn’t run the ball at all. At all. And yards after the catch were non-existant. I don’t think I have ever seen more 2 yard outs in my life.
To top it all off, we couldn’t tackle. Huskers were delivering big hits all over the field. Our defense couldn’t muster anything more than a half hearted arm tackle. I think with a review you easily show that over half of Nebraska’s rushing yards came after our first missed tackle. Compare that with Calhoun’s inability to keep stanging after shirt grabs and you can see the difference between these two football clubs..
Sure there are plenty of other plays to look at that affected the output of this game. Dropped first half catches, poor kickoff coverage, failed two point conversions (Barnett, why the hell did you call a 2 point conversion in the first half? I’m sure I don’t have to point out that if we just kicked the exta points on both of those TD’s we could have scored a TD on the final drive to tie), ill timed interceptions, and the inability to defend a telegraphed fake field goal. All these things led to our demise, but we could have survived all of those miscues, if our team simply lived up to two simple standards.
Tackling and Toughness.

Lets not forget the great clock management by the Buffs in the second half. Three wasted time outs….lack of a hurry up offense on the final drive….Coaching at its finest.

Jamal Lord tried to help us win, but his superior “skillz” won in the end. JL for Heisman.
Hey Gary, lets change up some of the staff eh?

I talked smack early…I was a realist as of late, I will not jump back on the Husker bandwagon now, but I want to share a few thoughts…
1- Scew you CU, we won
2- Frank Solich still needs to be fired
3- Jamaal Lord is the worst quarterback in Nebraska history
4- CU really sucks this year
5- The Huskers will get trounced at the Holiday Bowl
5- 9-3 is still better than 5-7
It’s been real Buff fans. I think our streak of 10 in a row has begun once again….
Happy Holidays

This team was one of the most underachieving we’ve had in recent memory. The playcalling was subpar today and except for the play of our wide receivers we would have been blown out. I can’t believe CU finished last in the big XII in rushing per game this year. How can that happen? Even with 4 new o-lineman that is just terrible.
Looking ahead to next year, who is going to catch the ball for us. Monteih and Bloom are going to be our starting WR’s? Heaven forbid.

We need a new buffalo too…Ralphie refused to run today….she stopped at like the 20 in the first half and had to be pushed/dragged to her trailer, and they didn’t even bother with her in the second half.

Look on the bright side, you still have the Bronco’s!

I heard Spurrier might be looking for a new job next year (placing him at Tenn. if Fulmer retires). Time we got someone with a better ‘passion’ for the sport or else we will have a hard time getting back to that RTD thing. Sorry Barnett, after this season, I’m not sure if you still have it. As the Cub fans say.. Wait till next year. And let’s make good on that statement in 2004. Go Buffs!

poor Buffs!!

Congrats to Medford “Wheels” Moorer for winning the buffalo heart award.

I said it before and I will say it again- Nebraska has not beaten a quality opponent this season, but beating a poor Buffs squad sure does feel good! The best play of the day was when NU
one-upped Barnett at his own game with the fake field goal! Take that, Gary!

How does it feel to get wasted by our quarterback Jammal Lord (a.k.a. worst quarterback in the history of Nebraska)

By the way…..you people are THE most EVIl people! What you did to the Kansas team was horrible and rude. Slashing their tires is way outta line. I hear your fans pee on people. How rude….come to NU and 9/10 of the NU fans will teach you what it means to be well-mannered and civil.

Bullshit! I never met a Husker fan that wasn’t a cocksucker!
November 29th, 2003 on 7:52 am
Huskers were just too good for colorado this year, the score could have easily been much worse for CU than it was. HA HA BUFFS
YA JUST PLAIN SUCK!
Enjoy watching the bowl games….from Boulder!

Kevin you know the NU fans are much more well behaved than you CU fans. CU fans treat every team like dirt. No worse than dirt!!! your rude and you get drunk all the time. But I guess you think that is ok. And like Averagehusker said: Maybe you should go to Lincoln and learn what being a real College Football Fan is all about.
GO BIG RED!!!
November 29th, 2003 on 4:44 pm
Yeah apparently classy fan behavior is a slogan such as “Sal is Dead, Go Big Red”. No one from Colorado could ever live up that standard. Never gonna forget that year.
Maybe you’re right, maybe all of us alcoholic, smartass CU fans should take a trip to Lincoln to get a moral education, since apparently no one gets drunk or is rude there… HA HA HA! Good one! If being a “real” college football fan means habitual sex with livestock and in-breeding, then you are right, I’m not a fan.
But before I get pulled into a troll-baited flamefest, all I really have to say is:
Please Dog give us some coaching changes at CU.
Barnett has now proven he cannot keep a competitive program running over the long term. How many times this season did we all say, “What the fuck was that call?” How many times was the clock completely mismanaged? How many times did our conditioning fall short of our opponents? How many times did runningbacks dance instead of hitting holes? All coaching.
This team was good enough to be in the Big XII championship game were it not for the coaching.
November 29th, 2003 on 7:44 pm
That reminds me, on the topic of running backs…
Calhoun: We all like your zig-zagging talent, but you need to follow your lead blockers and hit the holes running STRAIGHT. When you keep switching directions, that just gives the defense more time to catch up to you. With your track-star speed, you should be leaving them in the dust. There were countless times this season where you should have just lowered your head and fallen forward for an extra 2 or 3 yards, but instead, you ran sideways and were tackled backwards for a net loss.
But as Sam pointed out, this is a coaching issue. There should be someone telling you this in practice rather than me, a no talent computer dork sitting in his nerd-dungeon.

“There should be someone telling you this in practice rather than me, a no talent computer dork sitting in his nerd-dungeon.” <<<Post of the season right there, nerd-dungeon was the clincher.

Kevin, I got your back on that one. I’ve been to Lincoln and I’ve never met more pricks in my life. We were minding our own business when a bunch of cattle-breeding ingrates came over and started pushing us, trying to encircle our group into a fight. Thankfully, some of Lincoln’s finest (and only fine people) were there to assist in breaking up the NU gang that was about to level us for nothing more than wearing a CU hat and a few sweatshirts. It’s no wonder with such bold and crass in-your-face treatment that you aren’t respected so well in Boulder. So I guess you get what you deserve.
And about KSU, that’s crap. When KSU was in Boulder in 2002, I spent most the afternoon talking to KSU fans that were hanging out at one of the bars in town and they seemed to mention what fucking assholes you all were in Lincoln. I’m glad they won the North. Like we all agreed in 2002- “Better one of us than the jerks at NU.”

Just a funny story of one of my encounters with a NU fan:
2 years ago, I always had a customer that came in my store and ragged me about being a CU fan. The whole season I told him he’d better be quiet because Colorado was going to thump NU badly. Well, I had the game on tv, and Colorado was pounding nu. He just said something smartassed and said nu would come back and win. Well, the onslaught continued (final 62-36), and I didn’t see this gentleman for a year. The next time he came in, he was wearing a University of Texas hat and t-shirt. I offered him some comfort insoles(I run a shoe-store) and he asked me why he would need them. I told him, “So you don’t hurt your feet as your jumping off the bandwagon.”

May I repeat — TACKLING & TOUGHNESS. Does anyone notice the sad lack of awards from Buffs.tv this year!? It’s because no one, yes no one, on the team has deserved one since the UCLA game.
I do think it’s overly harsh to call out Calhoun after this game. How could you choose just one when this was a total team loss.
Extra laps for everyone (I know it’s the off season but we had best start training for fall “04)!

Both Nebraska and Colorado have had a tough season, and not enough talent/coaching to achive what both teams feel they need to compete in the Big 12, and even on the national level. It seems Nebraska is the only one of the two to actually try and do something about it. Maybe they shouldnt be the only team to fire their head coach. Should be intersting to see what happens with Iowa State and Penn ST.
November 30th, 2003 on 5:52 pm
Huskerz,
I couldn’t agree more with you. I’m still just shocked that NU would fire a coach with his type of record. I guess it’s kind of like managing the Yankees- win it all and be feared or go home.
For CU, Barnett should be on a watch list. Something needs to be done and soon.
As hard as it is to admit this, good luck to NU in their bowl game. We need all the Big 12 teams to represent this year and make a better case for our conference.
December 1st, 2003 on 5:14 pm
Its tough to wish luck to others teams that you call rivals, NU fans will have to hope Oklahoma wins it all. They are atop the Big 12 and the BCS standings with all the talent that the Huskers and Buffs wish they had. The firing of Solich is hard for most of us to swallow, hopefully something good will come of it. Colorado has a great coach and needs to start making some changes of his own to get things back to where CU is used to being. Not ALL Husker and Buffalo fans are perfect and some make others look bad…but I love the excitment of watching the two teams go at each other…it is what college football is all about.
Best of luck to all the Big 12, i agree it needs to be admired as one of the best.

Huskerzalltheway,
I know CU and NU fans don’t agree on much but I totally agree with everything you just said. I hope OU does go all the way, just makes the conference look better. GOOD LUCK SOONERS!!!

Gary and Joel are looking mighty good tonight!!!
How long do we have to wait to see the offensive genius of Coach Hawkins?
I am not sure he is up to coaching in the Big 12.
It is a shame the defense cannot get any support from the offense.
