Buffs let one slip away.

In a game that was only fitting for this year of the Buffaloes, the Buffs D showed up and played tough against a grand passing attack. The offense….the offense must’ve missed the filght to Texas. The Buffs D started the game with 4 straight interceptions, and the offense could do no better than 14 points. In the third quarter the buffs offense seemed to have the same play calling every series…1st down give to Jolley no gain…incomplete, incomplete….where’s the first down pass, where was Brian Calhoun, he at least ran for positive yardage. The Buffs managed a late rally, but Klatt threw a key interception, allowing Tech to run out the clock. Coach Barnett said after “On a night where we played halfway decent, we would have won that game.” Too bad it takes more than half a team to win football games.

We lost this game due to horrible play calling and an atrocious offensive line.
But please stop heaping praise on our defense. Yes our defense came up with 6 turnovers and were playing on fire in the first quarter, but please remember we still gave up 497 total yards, registered just a singe sack and could only manage to force the Red Raiders to punt twice.
Please fire Shawn Watson and Vince Okruch. They both suck. Even Neil Woellk is calling for Okruch’s head. There is no moral victory here. Just a team who has been repeatedly outplayed, out-schemed and out-coached on the field.
My favorite quotes from Saturday… Asked if he wanted to get Bloom more involved in the offense, Barnett said, “I’m going to let you ask (offensive coordinator Shawn) Watson that question.” Watson: “Teddy (Gilmore, receivers coach) controls that, and that Tech’s pressure on Klatt made it difficult to get Bloom the ball”. Teddy Gilmore may be an excellent receivers coach, but he has nothing to do with play calling. Stop pointing fingers Watson and start looking for a new job because you need to get out of here.

Well, Buffs fans, I was there. I saw the ordeal live and in person. On a night where I feared Symons would break the passing record, I saw the Buffs offense do absolutely nothing. Symons was our best player. I came out of my seat 12 seconds into the game after the int., then again 5 seconds later when we scored on a fade route. 17 seconds and we were on the board. We scored again quickly, and the Tech fans began to leave. Then we went to shit. Tech has one of the worst defenses in the country and we did nothing. I totally agree with Marc on his complaints about play calling. I could predict every play before they went to the line. The fans around me were amazed, but to us Buffs fans, it’s not that hard. We need to get the ball in Bloom’s hands. He touched the ball twice. He’s one of the fastest players in college football and we can get him the rock??!? Put him in and let him run the option! Run a reverse pass. Actually set up the reverse by faking it a few times!! Just get him the ball!! Our defense played very well. The problem is that the coaches had them lining up 7 to 10 yards deep every play!! We never blitzed! We ran a 4-2 man the entire game it seemed like. And our poor D-Line got no pressure on Symons all day. It was sad to see our team play so awesome at times, and so horrible at other times. But I’ll leave this on a positive note, like I always try to do: We’re a very young team, and once the O-line gets it together, Barnett gets a little more creative in his play calling, and the defensive coaches pull their heads out of their ass, we’re going to have an outstanding team. It was apparent Saturday that we have a very talented team, we just can’t put it all together. I hate to say anything about next year in the middle of the season, but man, we’re going to be really good in years to come.

I have another rant. I just saw a comment from the Daily Camera in which Barnett said “Right now our defense is playing as well as anyone.” HOW CAN HE SAY THAT? This is exactly the kind of attitude that will lead to less than mediocre teams year in and year out. He is pissing in his boots and telling us it’s raining, and I’m not buying it.
Sure, the D did force 5 interceptions, which is an accomplishment worthy of kudos. However, Symons still passed for 399 yards, they still had almost 500 total yards, and they won the damn game. CU’s offense was shut down, except for another good effort by Klatt and his receiving corps.
Again the special teams stunk-up the joint. Guess who the special teams coach is? None other than Gary Milhous Barnett!
I can assure you that I will be back next week with more insightful commentary. I ask the hard questions, make the comments and observations that Barnett and his goons don’t want to hear, and call for change!
P.S. – It is time for change within the ranks of the Broncos as well!

Kevin I don’t know what team you have been watching, but the defense has been lining up 7 to 10 yards deep all year. Plus this 4-2 defense sucks, if it was so good why isn’t every team using it. We all know what needs to be done, it’s just a matter of doing it.
