Here come the Sooners
filed in Pre-game on Oct.22, 2003 by Marc
I can’t remember single football game that I haven’t truly believed that the Buffs had a chance to win. Not in 95 when we played #3 A&M, Not in 97 when we played #2 Nebraska, Not in 01 when we played #2 Oregon. I have always believed in the Buffs. Well, this week may not be the same. I’m not sure the Buffs can win.
The Sooners have an amazing team on all sides of the ball. They are infinitely deep and are brimming with confidence. The Buffs on the other hand are injured, struggling and have no defense and no confidence. We are in a tough spot for sure. If the Sooners stay under 60 under the lights at Folsom field, it will only be because they played their backups for the entire second half.
Items that we can look for Buffalo improvement. How about blocking for our punter? Minimize the big plays. Minimize the turnovers. These are three areas to start. Hopefully we will see a stronger running game this week with the return of Lawrence Vickers…
Notes on the defense…
Both the players and Barnett sounded off on the defensive scheme this week. Everybody says it is not the scheme ore the coaching to blame, it is the consistent mistakes and missed assignments by the players. This makes me feel so much better. Barnett even went so far as to say that if there was a problem don’t look to Vince Okruch look to him. Well, all eyes are on you Barnett and we are waiting to see if you have anything to show us.
One last thought. The last time we played the Sooners and they were ranked #1 coming in was in 1987. We lost 6-24. I think if only lose 6-24 this time we should feel excellent about our defensive stand.

I was at the CU-OU game in either 1979 or 1980 (I don’t remember which year for sure) when the final score was 82-42 during our “Chucky Fairbanks” years. That was the longest game I have ever been to in my life!!! At least then they still sold beer in the stadium so we could numb some of the pain. I did not think I would ever see a game like that again but Saturday could prove me wrong. I would like to see us at least give them a game for more than 2 quarters. It will be interesting to see if the defense can play with OU’s caliber of offense. If they win (and I expect they will) let’s make them earn it!

Yah we might lose to #1 Oklahoma, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but we will beat Nebraska and that pansy ass pink shirt defense(the laundry guy messed up and washed the reds with the whites)

Well unranked West Virginia just pounded #3 Virginia Tech. I think I’m gonna keep the little hope I have in an upset. I think if the buffs want it enough it can be theirs. Anyone who can should get out to the game either way to cheer them on.

I can’t believe Barnett is willing to take the fall for his assistant coaches. So I guess the rest of the year the players are playing for Barnett’s job?

You guys are all too negative. Did you guys expect Pesavento to lead us to the Fiesta Bowl, because I sure as hell didn’t. Any team can beat anyone on any Saturday(or Wednesday as West Virginia proved against a high-octane Virginia Tech.) OU’s riding high and thinking they can’t be beaten. CU has nothing to lose, and that makes them a very dangerous team. I’m going to be the only person in America that is going to pick an upset on Saturday. F’ OU and F’ Stoops. Go CU!!!!!

Get real Colorado, you think you are actually going to beat OU?!??! You couldn’t even get past Baylor and barely got past KU. Get your heads out of the could and come down to reality. I guarantee that both OU and NU are going to spank you team!

Tyler,
The majority of the CU fans on this board are extremely loyal to this team no matter how good or bad they are. I have been a Buff fan for 25 years and will continue to support this team until the day I die. However we are also realists and understand what we are facing on Saturday. Anyone who has seen any of our games this year knows we have serious problems on defense. That does not mean we don’t support the team (we do) but we have to be realistic. I would love to see an upset of OU and I will be there in black and gold cheering them on, I am just not counting on it.

Yah……..you guys really will beat the pinks shirt defense! I dont think so. If you do it will be b/c we are playing a bad game not b/c your better. What is your record this year……….I forgot I lost track after your 4th loss. You cant handle the blackshirts!

What does it say on the right hand side of the page??? I believe that it say you have given up 40.1 points this year. No way in HELLLL you are going to beat OU. And people wonder why Colorado has the worst fans in college football. You try to start sh*t with everyone and have nothing to back it up with. Baylor the worst team in history kicked you asses and Kansas almost did and you still talk smack about OU. Amazing that between finding time being the biggest school of drunks that you can even show up for games. What is your record again? Get used to losing because you are going to lose when NU plays you too. GO BIG RED!!!!

Like most in this forum, I am a lifelong fan of the oft-hapless Buffalos. However, it saddens and disgusts me to see comments about how this is normal, this is just a bad year, these things happen. If that attitude was to exist in a business setting (and it does) then the business would quickly fold (and they do).
Stop the madness of being a Buff-drone and demand changes! Is the best that you can do is berate the Sooners of Oklahoma, clearly the most dominant team in the land, and perhaps one of the best of all time? Truthfully I hope that OU destroys CU and continues their title march unblemished. I like to see dominance and you should too. Further, we should aspire to be like the Sooners, not vilify them because they are great! Coach Stoops is clearly a coaching genius, a true great in the game. Barnett is not, he is an anti-fan, anti-internet, excuse-maker who is quick to blame his players.
Speaking of which, can anyone explain to me the logic of deflecting blame from the coaches onto the players, when almost every player is at fault? Is it truly possible that 95% of CU’s top-class athletes (and they ARE top class) can play so poorly? I can understand if a few guys are “busts”, but the lion’s share of the team? This screams of coaching ineffectiveness! And of course Barnett is going to try to deflect the criticism from his assistants to himself because he is contractually untouchable, while they are not.
Friends, know this: with Barnett at the helm we will see a losing team, a team that statistically is now the WORST in the land, and we will be vilified, kept from watching practice by jack-booted security thugs, and blamed for their performance. We will be told to be patience, we will be placated with tales of past glories, given the idle platitudes of schemes that work, execution that does not. I for one am tired of this and I long for the day that Barnett departs. Your time is nigh coach Barnett, your time is nigh!

Do any of you actually read the posts before writing your own diatribe? Where on this page do you see any of the Buffs fans “bashing” the Sooners. The only comments I see are along the lines of “The Sooners have an amazing team on all sides of the ball”.
Husker – No one here has tried to start shit with OU. In fact, we have more NU fans that come on a Buffs website and try to start shit than anything else. Using your definition, maybe NU has the worst fans.
AshamedBuff – Thanks for your comments. Take a look around and you’ll see that we have demaded changes for some time now. I, along with others that run this board, have been vocal about my opinions about the coaching staff. At this point, I focus most of the blame on the coordinators, but if Barnett continues to stand behind them and refuse to make changes, I will begin to call for his head. As much as it sucks, these types of seasons DO happen. Look at OU through most of the 1990’s. The real test will be to see how Barnett and his team respond to this adversity next year. If it’s more of the same, then it’s time for him to go.

I usually believe where there is a will there is a way. That is the beauty of football, like the comments above have said, anything can happen come game time. However, what makes me think that this will not be the case for CU this weekend, and this season more than likely is because it seems that our team does not have the will to win. We are playing without heart, without the attitude that we can win and turn things around this season. As a student, I have heard that our players are fully expecting to be pummeled this weekend by the Sooners. If that is the way our players are thinking, I can only expect result to follow their mind set. I am not sure who to blame: the coaching staff, the team leadership, a little of both, the fans? Nah, certainly not the fans. We have been there and ready to chear because cheering is all that we can do; it is just impossible to chear when your team plays with such a lack of emotion.

well we lost 34-20 but I haven’t seen the buffs play like they did all season. A couple breaks and we would of had that game. Great job to all the players for stepping it up and playing an awesome game, we should be proud considering that we are one of only 3 teams to not be outscored by 34 or more (and we were second in the margin for the sooners) No point in looking behind now though, Look out Texas Tech!

p.s. Is it just me or are there more Nebraskan fans talkin sh*t than actual buff fans?

Yeah there are many NU fans talking smack. I for one give less than a shit what any of them say. I know we will be the ones laughing T-day weekend. GO BUFFS!!!

I’ll admit I have not followed CU much this year but I think ANY team is going to be hard pressed to beat OU (I have some hope for OSU to do it, however).
I was just in Norman last week when Missouri played them. I thought the Tigers played them very well except for 7 minutes at the end of the first half. While watching the game from the stands I could really not see any weakness at all on any side of the ball. My hopes and prayers go with CU this weekend.
We’ll see you guys in two weeks. Be afraid…
