Well, it wasn’t pretty but we got it done. Then again I never really got to see the action so I don’t even know how pretty it was.
We started off the game by going up by 14 before people realized that the wind would play a significant factor in the kicking game. Brown started off his amazing 309 yard day with a 78 yard carry up the middle for a touchdown. The Buffs followed that up with another 3 and out stop of KU and everybody thought that KU was in for a long day. But that’s not quite how it worked out.
Jeremy Bloom attempted to field the punt at the 2 yard line muffed it bad barely recovered on the 1. On the next play unstoppable Chris Brown was stopped for a 1 yard loss and a safety. We let Kansas into the end zone on their next two possession and all of a sudden the Buffs were in a 15-14 dog fight.
Near the start of the second quarter Chris Brown decided that was enough of being behind and set off on another long scoring run of 51 yards. The rest of the team followed him and we put the next two scores on the board. One of those being a 95 yard interception return for a touchdown by Donald Strickland. We could have been up by more, but we missed a field goal as somewhere in there too.
Anyway it was a game of big plays just like last week. When the Buffs needed to, they stopped the Jayhawks, but it still wasn’t altogether pretty. It was sloppy all around. The Buffs racked up 80 yards in penalties in the first half. Fortunately, they decided to stop committing those same atrocious fouls in the second half. The kicking game was horrible. I don’t have the numbers in front of me but it seemed everytime we turned around we were kicking of out of bounds. All-American Mark Mariscal average 29 yards on 2 punts in the first half. And I believe on every kick in the first half we committed at least 1 penalty. On one fumble recovery, we managed to commit 25 yards in penalties.
We won the game and Chris Brown ran into the record books and the Heisman race with runs of 78, 51, 24, 48 and 29 yards.
Go Buffs!
One more thing. In a show of sportsmanship after the game, Gary Barnett asked to speak to the Jayhawks. H told them to keep playing with heart. They had a great team and nothing to be ashamed of. Barnett’s speech tore the house down.
